Stiff test awaits Lady Rams in regional quarterfinals with Liberty Hill

The best takeaway from the week of practice was it allowed the Lady Rams plenty of time to get their legs back under them so they can take on Liberty Hill at full strength.

"We were definitely dragging Monday and Tuesday," Tarver said. "You could tell they were having trouble getting loose. About midway through Wednesday's practice it looked like they were back to normal."

As far as Mineral Wells' pitching staff is concerned, Tarver said he has every intention to continue to roll with his rotation of junior Allie Stephens and sophomore Kelsey Keeton that has worked exceptionally well thus far. For now, Stephens is penciled in as the game one starter, with Keeton available to sub in at a moment's notice for a necessary change of pace.

Another variable in this weekend's series is the potential for game-changing weather. Much like North Texas, China Spring experienced scattered thunderstorms on Thursday with a forecast that originally called for more rain over the weekend.

As of Friday's print deadline, the forecast for China Spring was mostly sunny and 91 degrees with a 10-percent chance of rain and moderate winds out of the south for both Friday and Saturday. Both teams will certainly hope this forecast holds true, as to not affect the flow of play.

With so many factors at play on the big stage of the regional quarterfinals, perhaps the biggest variable in the Lady Rams' favor going into the Liberty Hill matchup is Mineral Wells' unwavering mindset.

Just like their Kennedale games this year, Tarver said their is no sense of awe when facing a tough opponent for the 2014 Lady Rams.

"There is no mystique," he said. "I don't think you could put any team out on the field against us and worry about a mystique factor. I've told everybody in the world this: the best thing about this team is they show up and play softball. They like each other, they have a good time with each other and it doesn't matter who's the team across from them. They play hard, they expect to compete and they expect to win. That keeps them at the top of their game."

That's good news for Mineral Wells fans everywhere. If anything is certain, this is a special Lady Rams team and the top of their game is exactly where they'll need to be to achieve all they are capable of in this postseason.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
