CHINA SPRING – The greatest season in Mineral Wells softball history came to an end Saturday afternoon, when the Lady Rams lost a 5-2 decision to the second-ranked Liberty Hill Lady Panthers at China Spring High School, just outside Waco.
At 28-10, the 2014 Lady Rams were the winningest team in school history and matched the deepest playoff run in school history, reaching the regional quarterfinals for the second-straight year.
They gave Liberty Hill all they could handle in a game two battle and were just one pitch away from putting themselves in a position to tie the game at five in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Kelsey Keeton took the loss – despite a fabulous pitching performance – and also tied for the team lead at the plate with an identical stat line as third basemen Ashley Valdez, finishing 2-for-3 with a strikeout.
Saturday’s game also saw the end of the high school careers of Bethany Allen and Anaiz Mendoza. Both girls plan to attend Weatherford College next year, where Allen will continue her softball career.
