MINERAL WELLS —
The Mineral Wells Junior High School Lady Rams eighth-grade A team defeated the powerful Granbury Acton Lady Pirates, 20-16, Saturday to win first place in the Mineral Wells Invitational Tournament.
A strong lady Ram defense really shut down the inside offensive attack of the Lady Pirates and an aggressive press resulted in numerous steals by the Lady Rams to further shut down the offensive opportunities of the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Rams defeated Granbury Middle School on Friday night, 31-4, and followed with a 35-27 win over the Millsap Lady Bulldogs to reach the championship game.
Leading the lady Rams in scoring in the title game were post Tayha Ruelas with eight points, followed by wing Alli Blissitte with five.
Other Lady Rams scoring were post Jacy Grimes, who also had a strong defensive game, and point guard Brooklyn Lovern, who scored three points and did a great job of handling the ball under a lot of pressure along with wings Blissitte and Peyton Malone.
“Overall this was a great game for these Lady Rams who continue to improve each time they play,” Lady Rams head coach Jeff Brumfield said. “I would really like to congratulate the girls on their hard work and improvement this year.”
Other highlights include newcomer Stormie Mayo, who “added a lot of defensive pressure that resulted in Lady Pirate turnovers,” Brumfield said. “Ty Suitors really came up strong at the end of the game with several defensive stops and rebounds.
“Wings Blissitte and Malone really helped handle the ball under a lot of pressure and have been strong starters all year. Mollie Simonton played well despite having a case of the flu.”
