SAGINAW – Both Mineral Wells soccer teams raised their respective District 12-4A records to 3-2 after the Rams and Lady Rams defeated Saginaw here Tuesday night at Roughrider Stadium.
In the first match of the evening, the Lady Rams shut out the Lady Riders, 3-0.
Molly Clarke opened the scoring on a goal early in the first half on a free kick.
The Lady Rams’ lead grew to 2-0 when Miriam Garcia fired a pass to Mollie Martinez, who put the ball in the back of the net.
Garcia closed the scoring with an unassisted goal in the second half.
Brittany Smith earned the shutout in goal for the Lady Rams.
Lady Rams coach John Tuggle pointed to defenders Mason Malone, Erin McGuire, Emily Clingings and Jessica Baeza as also being key to the shutout.
In the nightcap, the Rams shut out the Roughriders, 2-0, with Caleb Bandy earning the shutout in goal.
“We showed up with one thing in mind (Tuesday) night, and that was to return home with a win,” Rams head coach Rolando Borjon said. “I told the boys to stay positive and relaxed throughout the entire match, and they did.”
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a pinpoint header assist from Gilbert Castorena to Roberto Martinez.
Leading 1-0 as the match moved to the second half, MWHS forward Martinez was fouled inside the box.
Officials awarded the Rams a penalty kick, and Serjio Castillo put the ball past the Saginaw keeper to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Bandy and the Rams’ defense held Saginaw in check the rest of the match to secure the win.
“This was a big win for us,” Borjon said. “The boys did a good job of battling the wind in the first half, and they played a solid second half.”
