Mineral Wells High School senior A.J. Williams was selected to represent the Lone Star State in a basketball tournament set for this summer.
He will travel with other athletes from across the nation to the Gold Coast of Australia to participate in the Down Under Sports Tournament, according to his mother, Marcelinda Williams.
She explained much of the funding for the trip will come from individual donors in the community and said a bake sale this weekend will provide an opportunity to raise some of the money needed.
Scheduled for Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Walgreen’s, 201 Farm-to-Market Road 1821 North, locals will have a number of opportunities to support him in this opportunity.
In addition to a traditional bake sale, Williams said anyone who donates at least $20 will be entered in a drawing for the chance to win one of two trips.
First prize will be an all-expenses paid trip to the 2013 Down Under Sports Competition in Australia and Hawaii and the runner-up will receive a 5-day cruise for two.
T-shirts will also be available for $20 and proceeds will go toward the trip.
A.J. Williams was one of four MWHS all-district players chosen to compete in the 24th Annual Chicken Express All-Star Classic earlier this year.
