Lady Rams face Hirschi today in Class 3A playoffs

It will be a tall task for the Mineral Wells Lady Rams when they face Wichita Falls Hirschi today in the Class 3A bi-district playoffs.

The game, originally scheduled for Monday but was called when Hirschi did not go to school due to an ice storm, will tip off at 6:30 p.m. today at Bridgeport High School.

The Lady Rams are the third-place team from District 6-3A, while Hirschi was runner-up in District 5-3A.

The two teams met in December at the MWHS gym with Hirschi winning big, 71-33. In that game, the Lady Rams played the Lady Huskies close early in the contest as Hirschi led just 12-8 after the first quarter and 34-27 at the half.

But the Lady Huskies went on second-half runs of 15-4 in the third period and 22-2 in the fourth quarter to runaway with the game.

The Lady Rams were also playing without their best defensive player on the perimeter, senior Courtney Peña, and sophomore forward Madie Pappas had yet to be called up from the junior varsity.

Lady Rams head coach Leslie Holman welcomed the postponement. Last week when the game was set up, Holman wanted to play today to have a day of practice on Monday.

But Hirschi wanted to play on Monday and Holman lost the coin flip. But with the weather, Holman got her practice day back.

In the first meeting between the two teams, Hirschi played outstanding defense and held the Lady Rams to single digits in three of four quarters, Holman has a plan for the second meeting.

“We have put in an offensive attack for every defense I have seen them do,” she said.”They run a 1-2-2 full court press, a 2-2-1 half court trap, some zone and some man.

“We have several options lined out to defend them as well. Of course, when we played earlier we didn’t have everyone.

“They are very athletic and have a height advantage at the post. We have to make them work for every shot and rebound really well.

“The girls are ready to play and now that the game has been postponed, we had one more day to refine everything.”
