Azle Christian scored two quick first-quarter touchdowns and never looked back in a 46-0 win over the Community Christian School Warriors Saturday night in a Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship District 1, Division II game at Miller Stadium.

The Warriors (1-8, 0-1) finished second in district and will host a first-round playoff game. CCS will play Irving Faustina, a team that beat them 64-18 two weeks ago, at 7 p.m. Friday at Miller Stadium. All TCAF team make the playoffs.

Warriors head coach Bryan Horton was already shorthanded going into the contest, but in the first quarter the coach was without Samuel Brazeal, who left the game with an injury.

“Hopefully, Sammy’s knee will be OK for the playoffs,” Horton said. “If he can’t make it, it will have a big impact on our team.

“It also disrupted what we wanted to do (against Azle Christian), and we had to change a lot of things up. A lot of guys were having to play out of position after Sammy left the game.

“Azle Christian is a good team, and (the injury) may have made a difference on the scoreboard, but probably not in the final result.”

Horton did find some positives in the contest, particularly in eighth-grader Austin Norman, who is a starter on varsity after the Warriors have suffered so many injuries this season.

“Austin Norman is looking like he will be the freshman of the year ... next year,” Horton said. “But the main positive is we are getting a lot of young guys getting a lot of playing time.

“As much as I hate that for the seniors on the team, I do like that from a coaching perspective because that is one less thing I have to teach them next year.

“There were a lot of things to like. I have some guys who are buying into what we are doing. Getting field time is tough because there are only six spots, and everyone out there is working hard.

“That is the one benefit of the way things have gone for us. A lot of young guys have gotten valuable playing time.”

Azle Christian scored on a one-yard run on its first possession and kicked the PAT for an 8-0 lead.

After holding CCS on downs, Azle Christian scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.

In the second period, after forcing a CCS punt, Azle Christian extended its lead to 20-0 on a four-yard TD pass.

Two Warriors’ interceptions led to a pair of Azle Christian scores – the first on a 10-yard touchdown pass and the second on a 40-yard interception return – as the Crusaders increased their lead to 33-0.

Azle Christian added a 30-yard TD run and a 62-yard sprint to pay dirt to seal the game that was called on the mercy rule at the half.
