Although the Mineral Wells Lady Rams volleyball team has began District 6-3A play at 0-1, it took a big step Friday in a loss to defending district champion Kennedale.

The Lady Rams will continue District 6-3A play at 6:30 p.m. today at home against Lake Worth. The freshman and junior varsity matches will begin at 5 p.m.

The Lady Rams fought tooth-and-nail with the Ladykats in the opening game as MWHS dropped a 25-19 decision.

That opening game could have been viewed as Kennedale letting their guard down as MWHS came into the match with a 9-21 record.

But game two could have gone either way as each team battled hard with Kennedale eventually winning by the same 25-19 score as it had in the opener.

Kennedale salted the match with a 25-17 win where it had to earn every point it scored.

“I thought the girls played some of the best volleyball they have played all year on Friday,” Lady Rams head coach Taylor Eggleston said. “There were a few things that we addressed in practice (on Monday), but overall the girls played well.

“We really need to fight through to the end of games. I am hoping that the way we played Friday and the work we put in (on Monday at practice) will allow us to be successful (today).”

Eggleston said the key to beating Lake Worth (1-0) will be for the Lady Rams to come out with an aggressive mind set.

“We have to have the drive to finish,” she said. “It is also very important that we talk and eliminate our mistakes while capitalizing on Lake Worth’s mistakes.”

After today’s match the Lady Rams will travel to Springtown on Friday to face the state-ranked No. 14 Lady Porcupines.

First serve is 5 p.m.
