Burkburnett completes sweep of Lady Rams with 5-3 win

BURKBURNETT - State-ranked No. 6 Burkburnett outlasted Mineral Wells in game two of a best-of-three regional quarterfinal series as the Lady Bulldogs held off the Lady Rams, 5-3, here Saturday to complete a series sweep.

It was a history-making season for the Lady Rams, which advanced to the regional quarterfinals (third round) for the first time in school history.

It was also the second year in a row Burkburnett eliminated the Lady Rams from the playoffs. Burkburnett won game one of the series, 9-0, Friday night at Kessler Field.

“I am really proud of this team,” Lady Rams head coach David Tarver said. “The girls played hard all year, and when I look back at this season, at this team, I will always remember how hard they played and how far they got.”

Bethany Allen (two singles), Reagan Paterson (single, double), Hope Patterson (single, double) and Kelsey Keeton (two singles) each recorded a pair of hits for the Lady Rams. Reagan Patterson, Hope Patterson  and Chandler Ortiz (single) each drove in a run.

Keeton took the loss in the circle. The freshman allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Kylee Trahan was the winning pitcher for Burkburnett, allowing three runs on nine hits.

The Lady Rams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Reagan Patterson smashed a double off the left-field wall and was driven home after a single by Ortiz.

But Burkburnett tied the game in the bottom of the first, added another run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Rams scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to 4-3.

Allen reached on an error and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Reagan Patterson followed with a single to left field that plated Allen.

Patterson was replaced on the bases by courtesy runner Anaiz Mendoza.

Hope Patterson then doubled to right-centerfield to drive in Mendoza.

Burkburnett closed the scoring in the sixth when Trahan singled to drive in Kayla Armstrong, who reached on a double.
