SPRINGTOWN – Track and Field season marches on for the Rams and Lady Rams of Mineral Wells High School, who will send 13 athletes to the Regional Track Meet in Lubbock, April 25-26, after a strong showing at the District 5 and 6-3A Area Track Meet in Springtown, Wednesday.
Eight Rams and five Lady Rams finished in the top four of their respective events, helping their teams to top five overall finishes at the meet.
Although the Lady Rams had fewer regional qualifiers, the fourth-place girls' team – with a total of 63 points – boasted Mineral Wells' only gold medal winner when Alex Pearcy crossed the finish line first in the 800 meters in 2:28.84 minutes.
Pearcy beat out teammate Yesenia Martinez, who came in sixth with a time of 2:37.89.
Peacy also qualified for regionals in two other events. She finished second in the 1600 meters, registering a 5:45.29 mark, in front of third-place qualifier Karessa Fowler, who ran a 5:52.22, and fifth-place Martinez.
Pearcy ran on the regional qualifying 4x400-meter relay team of Katlyn Rivera, Raeann Rivera and Kylie Burke. The girls finished third with a time of 4:15.52.
Raeann Rivera, Fowler and Burke each qualified in one additional event.
For Rivera, it was a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.9 seconds. She fell just short of qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles, posting a time of 51.5 that would put her in fifth place.
Burke snagged a third-place finish in the 400 meters, with a time of 1:03.29. She edged out Katlyn Rivera, who finished fifth in 1:08.38.
Fowler finished second in the 3200 meters, posting a time of 12:43.74.
For the Rams, 64 overall points was enough to net them fifth place in the team competition. The top-five effort was driven by four silver-worthy performances and four more good enough for top four.
Juvaree Sutton was the most decorated Ram of the day, taking part in two silvers and a bronze.
