Shelstead breaks school record; Hicks, Pearcy, Douglas earn gold

LAKE WORTH – Mineral Wells tracksters DaShawn Hicks, Alex Pearcy and Shay Douglas each earned gold medals here on March 15 at the Bullfrog Relays.

Although she finished in second place to earn a silver medal, Lady Rams senior Sydney Shelstead broke a school record in discus with a toss of 129 feet, one inch.

Shelstead’s mark breaks the old school record of 115 feet, 10 inches set by Melba Hernandez in 2006.

Hicks won his second straight 100-meter dash, this time coming in with a winning time of 10.55, while Pearcy came in with a gold-medal time of 5:41.2 in the 1,600-meter run. Pearcy also earned a silver medal in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.7.

Also earning two medals for the Lady Rams was Taylor Parkhill. Parkhill placed second for a silver medal in pole vault (nine feet, six inches) and finished third for a bronze medal in the 100-meter hurdles (16.74).

And for the second time this season, Douglas won shot put, this time with a throw of 34 feet, four inches.

The Lady Rams finished fourth at the meet with 60 points.

At the girls’ junior varsity meet, Kera Harrison won a silver medal in shot put (32 feet) and earned a bronze in discus (63 feet, eight inches).

    The Mineral Wells Rams have climbed another mountain. After besting Kennedale for the first time in over a decade on their home field in the last week of March, the Rams (16-10, 7-2) swept their season series with the vaunted Wildcats, earning a 6-2 win in front of a home crowd, Friday night, to once again put themselves alone atop the District 6-3A standings with one game left to play.

Bad. But despite a brilliant defensive effort that kept the game locked at 1-0 until the final frame, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams found themselves so close, yet so far away from a district championship, falling to the second-ranked team in the state, the Kennedale Wildcats, for the second time this year, 3-0, Friday night.
