In four years he got the Gordon Longhorns to become a six-man football power once again, but now Shane Mallory, the former Strawn Greyhound turned Gordon head football coach, will leave the chore to another coach.

Gordon ISD has posted on its Web site a job opening for “a head football coach/teacher” as Mallory turned in his resignation it is believed three weeks ago.

“Shane has resigned for personal reasons,” Gordon principal Holly Campbell told the Index. “He will stay on at the school as a teacher to serve out his contract (which expires in June).”

Campbell was then asked about a rumor regarding Mallory’s replacement.

Several sources in and around Gordon have told the Index that the new Longhorns coach will be current Richland Springs head coach Jerry Burkhart, who has won the past two state championships and five of the past eight.

He has compiled an almost unrealistic 119-5 record at Richland Springs.

Campbell, however, was tight-lipped when asked if Burkhart would replace Mallory.

“That is the rumor,” is all Campbell would say regarding a new hire. She did say the matter would be discussed at the next Gordon ISD Board of trustees meeting, which will be at 6 p.m. today at the Gordon High School library.

The Index repeatedly tried reach Mallory for comment, but he did not return calls or text messages.

Mallory compiled a 25-19 record at Gordon. He went 1-9 in his first season in 2009, followed with a 6-4 record in 2010, and in 2011, despite an 8-2 record, the Longhorns did not qualify for the playoffs.

This past season, Mallory led the Longhorns to a 7-3 mark, including his second straight win over rival Strawn and his first-ever playoff berth as Gordon’s head coach.

The Longhorns rolled through the first three rounds of the playoffs, defeating Zephyr, 88-42 in the opening round and downing Savoy, 66-21, in the regional round.

Gordon won its third consecutive playoff game with a 70-35 win over Santa Anna in the state quarterfinals before falling to Abbott in the state semifinals, 74-60, in a game played at Hico.
