After over a month of speculation, the Ram faithful have a new leader in which to place their hope.

Friday night, the Mineral Wells ISD Board of Trustees announced their decision to hire Waco Midway's Co-Offensive Coordinator Gerald Perry as the new Athletic Director and head football coach of Mineral Wells High School.

Before entering his first and only season as Co-OC and running backs' coach for perennial 5A power Midway, Perry spent five years as the athletic director and head football coach for Bastrop High School, where he enjoyed a district championship season in 2009.

In his 21 years of coaching experience, Perry has also served as an assistant coach at Plano East, Burleson, Lake Worth and Lorena – where he graduated and won a state championship as a player in 1987.

Perry carries a bachelors and masters degree from Baylor University and is married with three children: 15-year-old Tristan, 12-year old Talynn and 3-year-old Tenley.

According to a press release, Perry was MWISD's first choice for the open position. The release added that Perry intends to bring unprecedented success to Mineral Wells athletics.

"Success for all sports, not just football, is priority for Coach Perry," the release said. "As a former high school five-sport letterman, band member, National Honor Society member and FFA member, Coach Perry understands the importance of being a well-rounded student-athlete.

"Students will be encouraged to compete in multiple sports and participate in other school organizations. An integral part of the program will be to place every student-athlete that has the work ethic and desire to play at the next level in the best position to do so."

An integral part of Perry's plan for sustained success is the incorporation of youth athletic programs. The release said Perry intends to have a hands-on approach in the development of youth organizations, middle school and high school programs with the goal that each mirrors the others.

MWISD Superintendent Dr. Gail Haterius said she was pleased with the hire.

"We are excited to have Coach Gerald Perry as our new Athletic Director/head football coach," she said. "We are always searching for ways to consistently provide students with excellent athletic opportunities.

"Coach Perry will ensure the continuity of effort by overseeing all athletic programs in the District. He will oversee the entire athletic program allowing for continuity that benefits each age or skill level.

"Coach Perry desires excellence in every program for every student. This expectation lines up very well with the District’s philosophy.  We believe we have selected the right person for our leadership team that will continue the Ram tradition of excellence.”
