‘Super Saturday’ not kind to Gordon, Strawn

Ira stuns Greyhounds with 62-16 win in hot Hico afternoon sun

By TOMMY WELLS   Special to the Index

HICO – Logan Morris’ older brother may well be the all-time leading rusher in six-man football history, but you probably couldn’t get the Strawn Greyhounds to say he is the better of the two Ira High School backs.

Especially not after Saturday.

Morris rushed for a career-high 337 yards and six touchdowns on Saturday and powered the Ira Bulldogs to a stunning 62-16 win over Strawn at the 2013 Hico Super Saturday kickoff gala.

The contest was one of four games played at the annual high school football showcase.

Ira, which entered the season ranked No. 7 in the Division II preseason rankings, didn’t waste any time in getting its offense untracked.

Ira took the opening kick marched 49 yards in four plays to grab a quick 8-0 lead just 1:49 into the contest.

Morris delivered the big blow in the drive, reeling off a 35-yard scoring run.

The Greyhounds exhibited a potent offense of its own on their ensuing possession.

Strawn knotted the score at 8-8 by marching 50 yards in seven plays, the final six coming on a pass from Harrison Nowak to junior end Nic Miller.

Jacob Jaramillo added the PAT try and tied the score with 5:12 left in the opening frame.

Morris didn’t let the game stay tied long.

On the first play from scrimmage on Ira’s next series, the IHS junior took a pitch around the right side and scampered 44 yards for his second touchdown.

Xaiver Olivo took some of the steam out of Ira’s celebrations, however.

The SHS junior blocked the Bulldogs extra-point attempt, leaving Ira holding a 14-8 cushion.

Nowak made sure Ira didn’t enjoy the upper hand too long.

The junior quarterback put together a quick 5-play, 50-yard drive on the Greyhounds’ following series.

Nowak opened the SHS drive with a pair of short passes to Jacob Trujillo, Ross Alison and Abram Jaramillo that moved the ball to the Ira 29.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
