DUBLIN – Running their record to an impressive 16-4, the Millsap Lady Bulldogs volleyball team won two of three games in the championship bracket of the Dublin tournament on Saturday to finish in third place.
The Lady Bulldogs’ lone loss came to state-ranked No. 2 Dublin in the tournament semifinals.
“Coming away with third place in this tournament is a big accomplishment,” Millsap head coach Kaycee Venekamp said. “I am very proud of the girls.”
The Lady Bulldogs swept three matches in pool play on Thursday which qualified the squad for the championship bracket.
In the quarterfinals, Millsap,paced by six kills from Hannah Hobson, easily dispatched Kopperl, 25-14, 25-17.
Setter Courtney Coker dished out a match-high 15 assists, and defensively, Morgan Strickland led with 12 digs.
Makenzie Shnabel led the Lady Bulldogs at the service line with eight points.
The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals and faced host Dublin. In a close match, the Lady Lions came away with a 25-21, 25-19 win.
Sydney Herbel led the Lady Bulldogs with six kills, with Sierra Jackson adding seven point from the line.
Coker recorded 13 assists, with Morgan Strickland leading defensively with 10 digs.
“We had already faced Dublin once this year and lost in four,” Venekamp said. “Unfortunately, we did play as well as we had hoped to.
“Our passing and (lack of) communication were definite weaknesses in this game.”
Millsap clinched third place with a 25-12, 25-21 win over Albany.
Herbel led at the net with nine kills, with Hobson adding eight stoppers.
Strickland once again reached double figures in digs with 10, and Herbel was close behind with nine.
Hobson and Jackson each finished with seven service points, and Coker had a tournament-high 18 assists.
“All the components that were missing (in the Dublin match) were back in full force against Albany,” Venekamp said. “The girls,played well together and really went to work.”
