Perrin remains unbeaten; Strawn wins but Gordon, Santo fall in area grid action

GORDON – Blanket outlasted the Gordon Longhorns, 28-24, here Friday night in a non-district contest.

The loss drops the Longhorns’ record to 1-2, while Blanket stays unbeaten at 3-0.

Blanket led 6-0 at the half as Gordon committed three turnovers, including a pair of interceptions.

But the ‘Horns took an 18-14 lead in the second half after a touchdown by Dylan Burch. However, Blanket held the ‘Horns to one score for the remainder of the contest while adding a two touchdowns to secure the win.

“We played a very good team with everyone back from last year,” Gordon head coach Joe Kostiha said. “But it was a good test for us. We have a good non-district schedule loaded with tough teams.

“I thought our team played well, but to beat a good team you can’t turn the ball over. We are very young and inexperienced, and our inexperienced showed (Friday) night.

“We are making strides and getting better, and if we keep getting better every week by district we will get back to where we want to be.”

Chase Coffman, Brandon Gonzales and Humberto Estrada also reached the end zone for the Longhorns.

Burch led the Longhorns with 103 yards on 18 carries. Estarda had 58 yards on nine totes, and Jake Wigington carried three times for 15 yards.

The Longhorns will be open next week and will play next on Sept. 27 at rival Strawn.

Perrin 28, Lake Country 12

FORT WORTH  – Perrin remains unbeaten after the Pirates defeated Lake Country Christian, 28-12, here Friday night in a non-district contest.

The win raises the Pirates’ record to 3-0.

Perrin is open next week and will continue non-district play on Sept. 27 at home against Santo.

Strawn 58, Bryson 14

BRYSON – Strawn rolled up 512 yards of total offense as the Greyhounds ran past the Bryson Cowboys, 58-14, here Friday night in a non-district contest.

The win elevates the Greyhounds to 2-1.

Strawn will continue non-district play Friday (Sept. 20) at home against Lueders-Avoca.

Dublin 35, Santo 25

SANTO – Class 2A Dublin took advantage of seven Santo turnovers as the Lions outlasted the Wildcats, 35-25, here Friday night in a non-district contest.

Wildcats quarterback Kyle Moore kept Santo in the game with his feet. The junior kept the ball on an option play late in the third quarter and sprinted 85 yards for a touchdown. But Santo, which had missed earlier on an extra point kick, went for two and the run failed, leaving Dublin with a 28-19 lead entering the fourth. The Lions put the game away with a touchdown in the final stanza before Moore reached the end zone on a six-yard run to close the scoring.

Santo finished with 297 total yards, including 294 on the ground.

The loss, the first the ‘Cats have suffered this season, drops Santo to 2-1.

Santo will continue non-district play Friday (Sept. 20) at Olney.
