JOSHUA – Playing on the road to begin the 2013-14 season, the Mineral Wells Rams fell to the Joshua Owls, 63-53, here Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Rams will play their home opener at 6 p.m. Friday against Graham.
The freshman and junior varsity games will tip off at 4:30 p.m.
Rams senior guard DeShawn Hicks led the team with 16 points, with junior guard Nick Wendt adding 11. Also scoring for MWHS was sophomore Broderick Johnson with eight points, junior Mark Glover with seven, juniors Juvaree Sutton, Rascellis Williams and Biren Clardy, each with three, and junior Coy Barrick and freshman Jordan Duckett, each with one.
Joshua led 13-10 after the first quarter. The action picked up in the second period as Joshua outscored Mineral Wells, 18-17, to extend its lead to 31-27 at the half.
In the third period, Joshua held the Rams to eight points while scoring 11 to increase its lead to 42-35 as the game entered the fourth quarter.
Joshua outscored the Rams 21-18 in the fourth period to secure the win.
As a team, the Rams were 18 of 51 from the field (35 percent) and 10 of 27 (37 percent) from the free throw line.
Sutton and Johnson each pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team, with six of Sutton’s rebounds on the offensive end.
