Returning from a Thanksgiving break, both the Mineral Wells Lady Rams and Rams basketball teams will continue non-district play today.
The Lady Rams (2-6) will play at home at 6:30 p.m. against Cisco, while the Rams (2-2) travel to Breckenridge with a 7:30 p.m. tip.
The Lady Rams are coming off a 51-48 victory over previously unbeaten Boyd. Lady Rams head coach Leslie Holman had not been not pleased with her team’s play underneath the basket prior to the Boyd game, but pointed out she saw great improvement underneath in the win.
“The girls did an outstanding job of blocking out and finding rebounds,” she said.”The girls dominated the boards (in the Boyd game).
“Tabby (Santibanez) held Boyd’s leading scorer to eight points below her average, and Tabby has been doing a good job lately under the boards.”
Holman hopes the momentum the Lady Rams gained will carry over to today.
“We played extremely hard and played better as a team (against Boyd),” she said. “We are making progress in every game and that is what I am looking for.
“The things we are working on in practice have started to pay off in games.”
The Rams will be seeking revenge when they play at Class 2A No. 12 Breckenridge. The Buckaroos handed the Rams a 81-69 defeat on Nov. 19.
The Rams are coming off an exciting come-from-behind 73-63 win over Saginaw Chisholm Trail a week ago.
The Rams were led last week by guard Nick Wendt, who poured in a career-high 31 points, including five three-pointers.
The Rams, which will need to show Breckenridge some new looks, had success defensively against Chisholm Trail when they switched from a man-to-man defense to a couple of zone defenses that frustrated Chisholm Trail and turned the game in MWHS’ favor.
“Our 2-3 zone slowed them down and took them out of what they like to do best,” Rams head coach Aaron Pappas said. “We also had success when we went to a 2-2-1 (zone) with a soft press.”
Both MWHS teams will play beginning Thursday at the Jacksboro tournament.
The Rams will play at 10:30 p.m. Thursday (Gym A) against Comanche and at 3 p.m. (Gym B) against Godley.
The Lady Rams will begin tournament play at noon Thursday (Gym B) against Windthorst and at 6 p.m. (Gym A) against host Jacksboro.
On Friday, the Rams will play at 10:30 a.m. (Gym A) Henrietta and at 7:30 p.m. in the same gym against Springtown. The Lady Rams will play at 6 p.m. (Gym B) Friday against Ponder.
Bracket play begins Saturday.
