Rams, Lady Rams advance to regional meet

Fowler wins girls’ cross country race, Pearcy second; Brook places second for boys

ARLINGTON – For the second year in a row, both the Mineral Wells Lady Rams and Rams cross country teams will advance to the Class 3A, Region I meet in Lubbock after qualifying as teams on Wednesday at the District 6-3A meet at Vandergriff Park.

The regional meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

The Lady Rams repeated their district championship from last year and had three of the top runners. Karessa Fowler finished first in the girls’ race followed by teammates Alex Pearcy and Katlyn Rivera.

But overall it was an outstanding meet for the MWHS girls team as all five runners placed in the top 11 individually.

MWHS head coach Jackie Harvey said Fowler and Pearcy executed their game plans well.

“We stress getting out to a fast start, and both Karessa and Alex did that,” Harvey said. “They both got out fast and kept a good pace. Basically, they just ran their race.

“But I was also impressed with Katlyn, who just started running cross country last year. She is a hard worker and she pushes Karessa and Alex and that has made them better runners.

“But I also thought Raeann (Rivera), Natalie (Ragland), Yesenia (Martinez) and Taylor (Otwell) ran good races. These girls have also been putting in hard work and have made the others better and our team better.”

The Rams were paced by a second-place finish from Preston Brooks, a fourth-place finish from Keith Stafford and a sixth-place finish from Juvaree Sutton.

“Preston did a good job,” Harvey said. “The entire boys team ran well. We barely missed out on first place. It was close and came down to the end.”

The Lady Rams junior varsity team also won the district championship, led by a second-place finish form Valerie Lord. Kylie Burk placed third, with Bailey Toalson finishing fourth and Macy Nix placing eighth. The Lady Rams put five runners in the top 9 as Sophia Romulo finished in ninth place.

The Rams’ top JV boys finisher was Keaton Evans, who finished fourth.

Harvey said the teams met one of two goals set for this year. The first was met when both teams qualified for the regional meet. Harvey explained the second goal.

“We have never gotten a cross country team out to state,” he said. “We have had individuals qualify for the state meet but never a team.

“I feel we have a great chance to get both of our teams out to the state meet (the top three teams and 10 individuals from each region advance to the state meet in Round Rock).

“Both the boys and girls have been working very hard this year and it paid off at the district meet. I feel we have a good chance to go further.”

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
