Lady Rams hold off Boyd for 51-48 victory

BOYD – Mineral Wells guards Natalie Ragland, Courtney Peña and Pam Hopkins combined for 33 points to lead the Lady Rams to a 51-48 victory over Boyd here Wednesday afternoon.

The win raises the Lady Rams’ record to 2-6.

Ragland led the Lady Rams with 13 points, with  Peña and Hopkins each adding 10.

Leading by five points in the fourth quarter, the Lady Rams held off a late Boyd rally to seal the win. The Lady Jackets trailed by one and had the ball with less than a minute remaining. With 13 seconds left, Boyd missed a shot from the field and Lady Rams’ post Tabby Santibanez came up with a rebound and was fouled.

Santibanez drained both free throws to give MWHS a three-point cushion. Boyd missed on a last-second shot as MWHS grabbed the rebound to seal the win.

“We put together a huge first half in just about every aspect of the game,” lady Rams head coach Leslie Holman said. “Courtney and Pam came out with the hot hand and put up 18 of our first half points.

“The girls did an outstanding job of blocking out and completely dominated the boards. Tabby did a great defensive job on the Lady Jackets leading scorer holding her to 12 points. She had been scoring in the 20’s.

“It was one of those games where you wish there wasn’t a half time because we lost our momentum. It wasn’t an easy win, but we held on.”

It was the first loss for Boyd this season.

Also scoring for the Lady Rams were Santibanez with eight points, Ashley Valdez with six, and Ashlynn Robinson and Kera Harrison, each with two.

The Lady Rams led 18-13 afer the first quarter and built a 34-24 lead at the half. Boyd outscored MWHS 11-6 in the third period to cut the Lady Rams’ lead to 40-35 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.

“ We played extremely hard and played better as a team,” Holman said. “We are making progress in every game and that is what I am looking for.

“They are doing the things we are working on in practice and it will pay off in the long run.”

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
