GRAFORD – Junior guard Breeana Raffaele recorded 17 points and senior post Sarah Van Remmen added 10 to lead the Santo Ladycats to a 56-43 victory over Poolville Saturday in the girls’ championship game of the Graford Tournament.
Raffaele was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Van Remmen earned all-tournament honors.
Santo, which fell behind by seven points early in the contest, rallied in the middle quarters and went on a 20-9 run in the fourth period to seal the win.
“I am proud of the girls’ no-quit attitude,” Ladycats head coach Tony Raffaele said. “It was a good tournament for us.
“Everyone was tired, but everyone stayed focused.”
Also scoring for Santo were Courtney Flanagan and Payton Billue, each with nine points, Alyssa McKennon with six and Taylor Nemeth with five.
Santo trailed 17-10 after the first quarter and 25-19 at the half. The Ladycats scored 17 points in the third period while holding Poolville to nine to take a 36-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
To reach the title game, the Ladycats on Friday defeated Brock junior varsity, 33-32. Santo jumped out to an 11-3 lead after the opening period only to see Brock rally to cut the lead to 28-24 as the game entered the fourth quarter. The Ladycats outscored Brock 5-3 in the final stanza.
Breeana Raffaele led the Ladycats with 12 points, with Van Remmen adding six.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were Nemeth with five, Billue with four, McKennon with three, Flanagan with two and Megan MacPherson with one.
“Brock JV is the toughest team we have faced (to that point) all year,” Tony Raffaele said. “We obviously relaxed and thought the game was over after the first period.
“That cannot happen if we expect to meet our goals this year.”
Hico girls defeat Millsap
HICO – Hico defeated the Millsap Lady Bulldogs, 48-34, here Friday night in a non-district contest.
Millsap’s Lauren Power almost recorded a double double as she finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Mikelyn Kruger added 10 points with six boards.
Millsap will play at home today at 6:30 p.m. against Chico.
