Wildcats down Huckabay to win own tourney

No. 5 Ladycats fall to No. 1 Lipan in battle of titans in girls’ championship game


SANTO – Christopher Hoover scored 14 points, Keith Chalker added 12 and Zarmorris Cannon finished with 11 to lead the Santo Wildcats to a 58-57 overtime victory over Huckabay Saturday night in the boys’ championship game of the Santo Tournament.

Cooper Barling, who scored three points, was the top playmaker with 10 assists, and Cannon grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. Zane Mauney, who added two points, led the Wildcats in steals with three.

Also scoring for Santo were Tim Long and Parker Conaway, each with eight points. Conaway also pulled down seven rebounds, with Long adding six boards.

Huckabay led 10-9 after the opening period and 22-18 at the half. Huckabay stretched its lead to 36-27 after three quarters, but the ‘Cats scored 31 points combined in the final stanza and overtime while holding Huckabay to 21 points to seal the victory.

Lipan 41, Ladycats 39

SANTO – In a battle of Class A girls’ basketball heavyweights, state-ranked No. 1 Lipan held on to defeat the No. 5 Santo Ladycats, 41-39, Saturday night in the championship game of the Santo Tournament.

The loss drops Santo to 10-2, with both losses coming against Lipan.

“We had our chances to seal the deal and it just didn’t happen,” Ladycats heads coach Tony Raffaele said. “Great job by Lipan, they are a very good team and are ranked No. 1 for that reason.

“We need more games like this ,and I believe we are getting closer to hitting our stride. The game had a great atmosphere and the gym was packed and loud.

“I believe everyone got their money’s worth because both teams left it on the floor. Small town rivalries are the best.

“Great job by Sarah (Van Remmen) in defending the post, and Courtney Flanagan played big shooting the ball and blocking out.

“Breeana Raffaele did a good job handling the ball at point and making it very hard for other teams to press.”

Payton Billue led the Ladycats with 11 points.

“Payton played out of her mind, and I knew she had it in her,” Tony Raffaele said. “Payton will be hard to stop if she continues playing with confidence.”

Billue and Van Remmen, who finished with seven points, were selected to the all-tournament team. Lipan’s Shauna Coleman and Rhianna Michou were also named to the all-tournament team.

Also scoring for the Ladycats were Breeana Raffaele with eight points, Flanagan with six, Alyssa McKennon with three, and Chloe McGlaun and Taylor Nemeth, each with two.

Santo led 11-9 after the first quarter and 24-21 at the break. But Lipan outscored the Ladycats 10-9 in the third period and 10-6 in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.

In the third-place game of the girls’ Santo Tournament, Hico defeated Cross Plains, 41-20, and Eastland defeated Springtown, 51-48, in the consolation finals.

Lady Hounds ground Graham

GRAHAM – Jayde Price scored 23 points and Jacqueline Berumen added 18 to lead the state-ranked No. 9 Strawn Lady Hounds to a 55-31 win over Class 3A Graham here Friday night.

Also scoring for Strawn (8-3) were Shelly Abbott with seven points, Cori Pollock with six and Tearany Atkins with one.

The Lady Hounds led 14-0 after the first quarter and 30-11 at the half. Strawn outscored Graham 15-7 in the third period to take a 45-18 lead into the fourth quarter.

Millsap girls go 1-2 at tourney

JACKSBORO – The Millsap Lady Bulldogs defeated Holliday but fell to Muenster and Paradise this past weekend at the Jacksboro tournament.

In the 41-33 victory over Holliday, Lauren Power recorded a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Also scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were Mikelyn Kruger with eight points, Sydney Herbel with seven, Jolee Carswell with five and Melissa Jones with one.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to Muenster, 69-23, with Herbel and Kruger each scoring six points to lead Millsap.

On Saturday, Millsap fell to Paradise, 44-37.

Acton narrowly defeats Lady Rams 8th A team

Granbury Acton defeated the Mineral Wells Junior High School eighth-grade Lady Rams “A” team, 24-22, Thursday night at the MWJH gym.

“The Lady Rams played an awesome game against a very strong and tall Acton team,” Lady Rams coach Jeff Brumley said. “This was an outstanding first game for the Lady Rams.”

Leading the Lady Rams in scoring were wing Alley Blissitte with eight points, followed by point guard Brooklyn Lovern with six.

Other Lady Rams scoring include Tahya Ruelas  with four points, and Jacy Grimes and Peyton Malone, each with two.

Leading the Lady Rams in steals were Alley Blissitte with four, Malone with three, and Grimes and Lovern, each with two. Outstanding rebounders were Ruellas and Grimes.

Lady Rams 8th “C” team falls

The Lady Rams eighth-grade “C” team played well their first game against Granbury Acton.

Valerie Lord and Jennifer Harrison were great on defense with numerous steals for the game. Jessie Rodriguez, Thalia Hinojosa and Jennifer Harrison rebounded well, and outstanding offensive player was Courtney Hall.

Acton slips past 7th A Lady Rams

Granbury Acton defeated the Mineral Wells Junior High School Lady Rams seventh-grade “A” team, 20-18, Thursday night at the MWJH gym.

“It was a very tough battle to the end,” Lady Rams coach Tammy Williams said. “This game was fought very hard by both teams.”

Leading the offense for the Lady Rams was Brittany Barbee with six points. Leading the defense was Sunni Lemley with nine rebounds, six steals and four points.

Kaylee Gregory was also a solid effort with four points, five rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots.

Lady Rams 8th “C” team falls

Granbury Acton defeated the Mineral Wells Junior High School Lady Rams seventh-grade “C” team, 26-10, Thursday afternoon at the MWJH gym.

Leading scorer for the Lady Rams was Tatum Wharton with four points. Leading the defense for the Lady Rams was Kelsey Davis with eight rebounds, a steal and two points.
