GLEN ROSE – Sydney Shelstead scored 20 points, Niya Benavides added 13 and Kennedy Shelstead finished with 12 to lead the Mineral Wells Lady Rams to a 52-49 victory over Hico here Saturday in the third-place game at the Glen Rose tournament.
“The girls played well, and Kennedy really gave us a spark,” Lady Rams head coach Ed Shelstead said. “I think our team is finally coming together.”
On Friday, MWHS split a pair of games. The Lady Rams defeated Glen Rose, 53-39, as Benavides scored 23 points and Sydney Shelstead added 13.
“Niya really shot the ball well,” Ed Shelstead said. “It was a very physical game, and we held our own.”
Also scoring were Courtney Peña with seven points, Bethany Allen with five, Kennedy Shelstead with four and Natalie Ragland with one.
Later Friday, the Lady Rams fell to China Spring.
In the opener on Thursday, Sydney Shelstead scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Rams to a 50-15 win over Meridian.
Also scoring were Benavides with eight points, Allen, Ragland, Ashlynn Robinson and Kennedy Shelstead, each with four, and Peña with two.
The Lady Rams will continue non-district action at 6:30 p.m. today at home against Graham.
Rams win two at tournament
GLEN ROSE – DaShawn Hicks and A.J. Williams each scored 15 points to lead the Mineral Wells Rams to a 52-41 win over Brownwood Friday at the Glen Rose tournament.
Also scoring for the Rams (7-4) were Biren Clardy with nine points, Ricky Scott with seven, Cris Valdez with three, Jacoby Prestwood with two and Ty Ashley with one.
In the opener Thursday morning, paced by Ashley’s 17 points and eight rebounds and Scott’s 16 points, the Rams defeated Tolar, 60-54.
Also scoring were Hicks with 11 points, Clardy with eight, Williams with six and Kevin Gregory with two.
Williams also grabbed eight rebounds.
On Thursday night, the Rams fell to Odessa High School.
The Rams concluded tournament play on Saturday. MWHS will continue non-district play at 6:30 p.m. today at Burleson Centennial.
