‘Hounds sink 6 treys in 59-35 win over Gordon

GORDON – Harrison Nowak scored 19 points and Ross Alison added 17 on Tuesday and helped power the Strawn Greyhounds to a 59-35 win over the Gordon Longhorns in a District 17-A showdown.

With the win, Strawn improved to 2-5 for the season and, more importantly, kept its playoff hopes alive by improving to 1-3 in loop play.

Gordon fell to 0-4 in the district standings.

Senior guard Cole Abbott spurred Strawn to the early lead.

After the two teams had battled to a 10-10 draw in the first, Abbott pulled up and nailed a three-point shot from the corner to send the Greyhounds into the second holding a 13-10 cushion.

Strawn, backed by seven second-quarter points by Alison and another clutch trey by Abbott, padded its lead in the second.

The Greyhounds outscored by a 16-7 run and stretched its lead to 29-17 at the half.

Abbott was Strawn’s third double-digit scorer in the contest, finishing with a season-high 14.

Nowak and Alison all but enabled Strawn to seal the game in the third. The two combined for 16 of their team’s 19 points and led the way for Strawn to grab a 48-25 lead at the start of the final eight minutes of the contest.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Strawn.

No. 7 Lady Hounds cruise to win

GORDON – State-ranked No. 7 Strawn jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back as the Lady Hounds handled the Gordon Lady Longhorns, 52-29, here Tuesday night in a District 17-A contest.

Jayde Price led the Lady Hounds with 14 points, with Shelly Abbott and Jacqueline Berumen each with 12.

Also scoring for the Lady Hounds (23-6, 5-1) were Tearany Atkins with eight points and Cori Pollock with six.

Strawn led 26-13 at the half and 40-21 after the third quarter.

Lady Rabbits blow out Bryson, 64-16

BRYSON – Tyler Wimberly scored 25 points and recorded six steals to lead the Graford Lady Rabbits to a convincing 64-16 win over Bryson here Tuesday night in a District 11-A contest.

“We were able to play good basketball, winning our last two district road games,” Lady Rabbits head coach Jarod Westmoreland said. “We are excited to be playing Paint Creek on Friday, which is Homecoming.”

Also scoring for Graford (15-10, 6-0) Sydney Wimberly with 14 points, Ali Brown with eight, Katie Rochelle and Erika Chemello, each with six, Ashley Hay with three, and Morgan Hendershott with two.

Chemello recorded six rebounds while garnering four assists, Hendershott had four rebounds and Sydney Wimberly finished with six rebounds and six steals.

Santo JV girls win tournament

HUCKABAY – Santo’s junior varsity Ladycats defeated Brock (44-33) and Lipan (41-31) before blowing out Poolville, 40-7, in the championship game of the Huckabay tournament.

In the championship game, Chasen Howard led the Ladycats with 14 points.

Also scoring for Santo (16-2) were Reagan Raffaele with 11 points, Caylin Edwards and Callie Wharton, each with five, Jawnee Hess with three and Emily Ashbrook with two.

“This group continues to play at a high level and are getting ready to take that next step,” Ladycats coach Tony Raffaele said. “The coaching staff is pleased with the way they are handling situations that arise and the preparation every day.”
