Lady Rams JV, frosh teams claim District 6-3A basketball co-championships

Finishing up the District 6-3A slate with a loss at Kennedale in no way takes away a fine season for the Mineral Wells Lady Rams junior varsity.

The Lady Rams won their first nine district games before falling here Tuesday night to Kennedale, 53-42, as both teams finish with identical 9-1 records and will share the district championship.

Kennedale jumped out to a 15-6 lead and never trailed, finishing off the game by outscoring the Lady Rams 14-11 in the fourth quarter.

Kennedale had led 28-15 at the half. Tabby Santibanez scored 11 points to lead the Lady Rams. Also scoring were Bre Hinojos and Grace Baeza, each with six points, Mason Malone,

Scarlett Eaton and Kera Harrison, each with five, and Carson Couger with four.

Lady Rams frosh win to claim co-district title

Maddie Pappas scored 17 points to lead the Mineral Wells Lady Rams to a 39-35 victory over Kennedale  at Kennedale to tie the Lady Kats for the District 6-3A championship.

Also scoring for the Lady Rams were Brooke Hale and Kenzi Huseman, each with six points, Katie Rivera with four, and Brailey Garcia, Elyssa Ogletree and Hernandez, each with two.

Kennedale led 8-5 after the opening period, but the Lady Rams went on a 16-4 run in the second quarter to take a 21-12 lead at the half.

Kennedale outscored MWHS 9-6 in the third period to cut the Lady Rams’ lead to 27-21 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.

Rams frosh win

Marvin Johnson nailed a basket at the buzzer to give the Mineral Wells Rams freshman team a 43-41 victory over the Kennedale Wildcats in a District 6-3A contest at Kennedale.

Johnson finished with a game-high 22 points. Also scoring were Tristan Seargeant with 11 points, Keith Stafford with four, and Z Beard, Branson Sanchez and Connor Jacobson, each with two.

The game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, 19-19 at the half and 31-31 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.

Rams JV falls

Kennedale scored 33 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Mineral Wells Rams junior varsity 78-53 in a District 6-3A contest at Kennedale.

Mark Glover led the Rams with 19 points, with Devon Edmond adding 13. Also scoring were Coy Barrick and Braxton Allen, each with six points, Dalton Mitchell with three, and Justin Hendrickson, Tanner Newsome and Conner Bradshaw, each with two.

Ladycats down Ranger; will play tiebreaker game

On Tuesday, Santo defeated Ranger, 57-25, as the win puts the state-ranked No. 6 Ladycats in a first-place tie with Poolville.

Santo and Poolville, each with 7-1 district marks, will play a first-place tiebreaker game at 8 p.m. today at Perrin.

Against Ranger, Sarah Van Remmen recorded a double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals.

Also scoring for Santo (26-4) were Meagan MacPherson and Payton Billue, each with 10 points (and each with four steals), Courtney Flanagan with seven, Breeana Raffaele with six (and five assists and three steals), Alyssa McKennon with four, and Chloe McGlaun and Kristy Trammell, each with two.

Santo boys win

Parker Conaway scored 14 points, Christopher Hoover added 13 and Cooper Barling and Zarmorris Cannon each finished with 11 to lead the Santo Wildcats to an 88-35 win over Ranger on Tuesday.

Santo (22-7) tied Chico for second place as each sport identical 5-3 records. Wildcats head coach Tony Smith said a tiebreaker game would be played next week with details TBA.

Also scoring for Santo were Tim Long with 10 points, Jordan Edwards with nine, Andrew Watkins with eight, Keith Chalker and Zane Mauney, each with three, and Colton Edwards, Corey Steiner and Tayler Jones, each with two.

Lady Hounds slip past Gorman

Jayde Price scored 33 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, registered eight steals and had three blocked shots to lead the No. 6 Strawn Lady Hounds to an 85-83 double overtime win over Gorman on Tuesday.

The game went into a second overtime when Shelly Abbott hit three consecutive free throws with .8 of a second left in the first overtime period. The Lady Hounds outscored Gorman 8-6 in the second OT to secure the win.

“We beat Gorman by 33 points the first time we played them,” Strawn head coach Joe Crabb said. “We were very fortunate to come away with a victory.”

Strawn (27-6, 9-1) and Lipan are co-district champions, with Strawn losing a coin flip to become the second seed.

Strawn will play Walnut Springs in the bi-district playoffs. Details are TBA.

Abbott also finished with a double double as she scored 22 points and issued 10 assists.

Also scoring for Strawn were Jacqueline Berumen with 17 points (and seven assists), Cori Pollock with eight, Tearany Atkins with three and Cidney Pollock with two.

Late surge lifts Gorman past Strawn

The Gorman Panthers used an 18-4 run in the fourth quarter on Tuesday and rallied to take a 58-51 come-from-behind win over the Strawn Greyhounds in a key District 17-A matchup in the SHS gym.

Strawn (1-7 in district), was led by Harrison Nowak, who pitched in a game-high 26 points before fouling out with late in the fourth quarter.

Seniors Cole Abbott and Bobby Wells both tallied nine for Strawn.

No. 10 ‘Rabbits win

On Tuesday, state-ranked No. 10 Graford ran past Woodson, 90-48, to raise its overall record to 21-6 and 7-1 in district play.

Tanner Hargrove scored 20 points to lead the ‘Rabbits, with Blake Smith adding 19. Also scoring were Quinton Reed with 12 points, Pepe Paz with 11, Dylan Hart with 10, Quinten Tabor with nine, Preston Ridgway with seven and Ivan Hernadez with two.

    Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

    The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

    I can think of at least 10.

    So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.

    In the Holiday Hills Country Club Guys and Dolls tournament, locals Denny and Sherry Hall turned in rounds of 77 and 73 to take first place in the opening round and second place on Sunday in the fourth flight. George and Linda Hutton turned in two solid rounds to place both days. The twosome shot 71 and 72 to take first place on Saturday and second place on Sunday in the second flight.
