Mineral Wells pitchers Chris Rapp and Dan Reay Turk combined for a one-hit shutout as the Rams defeated Fort Worth Eastern Hill, 11-0, Friday at Pratt Field during the Mineral Wells rotation tournament.
The contest was stopped after 4 1/2 innings due to run rule.
Rapp started and allowed one hit with no walks and four strikeouts in two innings. Turk pitched the last three innings, allowing no hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Although trying to find a second starting pitcher behind Matt Tincher, Rams skipper Bret Barrick said tournaments are a time to let several players take the mound.
“Both of them got up there and competed,” Barrick said. “They also kept their pitch counts down, and they did that by throwing strikes.
“Chris was hitting his spots and throwing his fast balls and curve balls for strikes. Dan Reay also hit his spots. Right now, we are just getting guys innings on the mound, and that is what tournaments are for.
“All I am asking any of our pitchers to do at this time of the year is to compete and throws strikes.”
The Rams (6-3) exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first frame.
Paden Patino smashed a two-run double in the inning, with McCain Mason, Aaron Wheeler and Turk each recording RBI singles. Mason and Brayden Garcia each scored on throwing errors.
The Rams added a run in the third inning. Mason was hit by a pitch, stole second base and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice.
Turk legged out an infield single that drove in Mason to extend the Rams’ lead to 8-0.
In the fourth inning, Colby Kissinger led off with an infield hit, and Bob Boudreau and Braxton Allen each walked to load the bases.
The next batter, Kristian Santibanez, ripped a line-drive single to right field that drove in Kissinger and Boudreau for a 10-0 lead.
Allen scored when the next batter, Mason, hit a sacrifice fly to right field as MWHS led 11-0.
Turk struck out the side in the fifth inning as the game was called on the run rule.
