Attending plays and busting ice ‘round Millsap

By Sharron Hudson | Special to the Index

With the first day of Winter officially being Dec. 21, everyone is taking advantage of those days when they can be out and about participating in Christmas activities. The women of the Millsap Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club recently met between bad weather days to enjoy a wonderful party.

Gathering at the Millsap Community Center the ladies were entertained with a play performed by 7th- and 8th-grade students from the Garner School Drama Department.

The play – "Indian Captive" – is the true story of the captivity of a pioneer girl. This was the students' UIL performance piece, and they had received two All Stars and two Honorable Mentions, plus an award for lighting at the competition. The performance was very authentic and enjoyable, and the young people were a delight.

The club members then traveled to Millsap Methodist Church for a lunch of sandwiches, fruits, cheeses and many desserts.

To wrap up the day, the women held an auction, with some of the hot items being an oil painting and hand-crafted jewelry. This was a fun time for these ladies who do many charitable acts for our area. Glad they had a great party!

Students at Millsap Elementary, besides doing their regular school work, have been busy preparing for Christmas. The 3rd- through 5th-graders performed a Christmas spoof of American Idol, while K through 2nd-graders have been diligently working on a "Moosical" program.

Also, the PTO has sponsored the Annual Christmas Store, which is a service project, so the boys and girls can do their own shopping.  There has been much preparation on floats and costuming as students were slated to participate in our Community Christmas Parade.  On Dec. 20, the Fall Awards Assembly will be held as a wrap-up before dismissing for the holidays. All students will have early release on Dec. 19 and 20, and the Christmas Break will be Dec. 23-Jan. 3. To all of Millsap School District: have a great vacation!

As they close out their 2013 training schedule, the Millsap VFD wanted the community to know that the firefighters who serve them have completed over 1,700 hours of training this year.  They also want to remind everyone to clearly mark your address big enough, reflective, and in plain view, so in case of emergency responders can locate your home.
