Making plans for warm months

 By Sharon Hudson

Though we’ll have chilly temperatures for a while longer, it’s time to begin to make some plans for the warm months.

For some folks those plans will include gardening, and beginning preparations are just around the corner.

Millsap’s Waldens Farm and Ranch Supply will have seed potatoes and onion sets arriving mid-January, and Parker County Master Gardner Association recommends getting the garden areas and beds ready now.

Onions, potatoes, and a few other vegetables can be planted six weeks or earlier before the last killing freeze.

According to the almanac the last killing frost will be after March 20, and it says that the first crop planted can be peas on Jan. 15.  Imagine, that’s in less than two weeks.

This is also an excellent time to transplant mature trees and shrubs, plus it’s planting time for fruit and pecan trees, grapes and berries.

Gardeners can contact Parker County Extension Agent Jon Green at (817)598-6168 or Palo Pinto County Extension Agent Scotty Mauney at (940) 659-1228 with any questions about gardening.  Let’s get out and enjoy the sunny days by preparing to raise some delicious food!

Our local Helping Hands Food Pantry will be busy as ever during 2014 providing the essential necessity of food to those in need.

This need is across the nation as at the end of every day seven million children go to bed hungry.

As Millsap is a rural area it is important that we know that in the U.S. 15.5 percent of rural households are food insecure and that is 3.1 million households.

In rural areas there are 8.5 million Americans living below the poverty level.

These homes include hard workers, children, and senior citizens where there is not always enough food.

This is a problem that is a continual battle everywhere, but here’s what we can do locally to help.
