Lots of holiday goings on out Millsap way

Mineral Wells Index

As each day has some aspect of Christmas in it, many are attending events that celebrate the season. In our town folks recently poured in to tour the Log Cabins and Millsap Methodist Church which were both beautifully decorated as a part of the Parker County Historical Society Candlelight Tour of Homes.

With well over 100 people coming in for this occasion, members of the Millsap Historical Society acted as very informative guides. They provided a lot of little known, interesting information about the buildings.

At the Log Cabins there were a host of fruit jars holding candles and a big cedar Christmas tree which had been decorated with handmade ornaments by the school's Junior Beta Club.

The Methodist Church, which is built in the shape of a cross, had many beautiful decorations which served as a backdrop to the building's magnificient stained glass windows.

There was no shortage of refreshments as the cabins' guides offered up cookies and cider, and while Santa visited with everyone in the church's annex there were all kinds of cookies and drinks available.

Members of the local Heritage Society considered it a successful day and appreciate all of the help that was given in putting the event together. It was a great honor to be chosen from among all of the historical places in the county to be a part of this tour and the local organization did a great job of presenting a portion of our history.

On the same day that the tour was taking place, the much anticipated Craft Fair at the High School was in full swing. There were some outstanding items available including rock sculptures, flannel camouflage baby cowboy boots, and hand sewn microwave potato bakers.  One booth that was an attention getter was the This Ain't Your Granny's Flower Club group. This is actually members of the High School's Floral Design Class. There are 55 students in the classes, and their teacher is Mrs. Wendy Lastovica. As a part of their class work the young people make arrangements for the public. They have done work for a wedding and had many beautiful designs available at the fair. They are looking forward to the possibilities that Valentine's Day, Springtime, and the Prom will bring so they can further apply their talents. To contact them for your floral needs call Mrs. Lastovica at 940 682-3212 or email her at wlastovica@millsapisd.net. The profits that the classes make are put back into supplies for their classes. They do a great job and are to be admired for their enthusiasm.

Staff and students are busy with a multitude of activities on all campuses, and among them are the MAP Program at the Elementary has chosen the residents of Weatherford Healthcare Center to help celebrate Christmas. As a community service project, the MAP Program is partnering with the High School Beta Club to gather needed and comfort items for the folks as well as visiting them with seasonal cheer. Another busy group is the newly formed 4-H Club, who recently gathered pecans on the Chipman Farm, located in the Poe Prairie area, as a fundraiser.  They put in a lot of hard work and got some good results for their toil.  As a special treat the third and fourth graders recently got the opportunity to attend the Nutcracker Ballet and experience the architecture at Bass Hall. Our students are fortunate that this was courtesy of the Alice Walton Arts Foundation. A lot going on to make the youngsters well-rounded people.

The Abandoned Cemetery Association recently held the drawing for the quilt that the Thumbs and Thimbles Quilters has given them for fundraising. The winner of this beautiful creation is Judy Savage of Weatherford. Ms. Savage was thrilled and said it was the first thing she had won since she was about 10 years old. The Cemetery Association recognizes and thanks the Quilters for their gracious donation.

Get well greetings to two well-know ladies of our area. Dorothy Wright, who for many years was a secretary and bus driver for our schools has been ill and Johnnie Doan is recovering from surgery, while anticipating the need for another one when she has recovered. Hope both of you heal quickly!

The kids are all looking forward to their Christmas break, and the dates for Millsap ISD are: Early Release Dec. 20 & 21; Break Dec. 24-Jan. 4; Teacher Workday Jan. 4; Spring Semester Begins Jan. 7.  Hope everyone has a great vacation!
