Spaghetti, valued grads and career planning

Mineral Wells Index

— As we look toward Valentines’ Day, the Millsap Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club is preparing for a very special event. The group is busy making plans for their Annual Lamplight Spaghetti Dinner.

Feb. 8 will find everyone who purchases a ticket for just $7 enjoying a meal of spaghetti with a choice of meat sauce, meatless sauce, or no sauce. Plus there will be a side salad with choice of ranch or house dressing and tea, water, or coffee. Kids 5 years old and under eat free. A delicious Sweet Shoppe will be open for business, and there will be a raffle of nice gift items. This will all take place at the Millsap Community Center, 4-8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from any club member, or you can call 817-360-6681 to buy one. This is always a wonderful event, so mark your calendars.

At the regular monthly meeting of the club, High School Principal Tammy Addison was the guest speaker. She said the school has made advances in student career planning. There has also been an increase in the number of college prep, advanced placement and college credit classes. Great strides have been made in vocational training for students who do not plan to attend college. We have a very strong school district, and the superintendent, board and personnel, with community support, work very hard to give our students a solid education.

In this vein, the Millsap Alumni Scholarship Foundation Board will be meeting on Jan. 24 to begin planning for scholarships to all Millsap seniors who apply to the foundation. This is going to be a big job as there are over 60 seniors graduating and a great number of these will be seeking higher education. The grads are not only given scholarships to college but to other types of higher education institutions, such as trade schools. Donations are always appreciated, and this would be a wonderful way to memorialize a loved one, as it is something that lasts and grows.  Donations may be mailed to Millsap Alumni Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 801 Millsap, TX 76066. This is a very worthy cause and we are thankful for the foundation’s yearly aid to our seniors.

The congregation of Holders Chapel is busy making plans for their annual Spring Festival set for May 17. The ladies are preparing to make a quilt for a drawing and discussing the goodies for their Famous Bake Shop. To entertain the kids the group has decided to have a bounce house on the grounds, and they will also have a yard sale.  There will be something for everyone, so set this date aside to go and have fun!

Jim Sanders, who is the pastor of Holders Chapel and Millsap Methodist Church, is ill with pneumonia. We wish this faithful servant a speedy recovery!

If you are looking for a way to volunteer, here’s a great way. The Millsap High School Library is in need of volunteers. The facility is not always available to students, so volunteers are needed for greater accessibility. If interested go to the high school and they can help you get started.

For adults around here who feel the need to exercise more there is a Free Exercise Class on Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m., in the Elementary Gym.  Come and meet the certified trainer who will help you get off to a healthy start in 2014. For more info call the MAP office at 940-682-3143.

Jan. 20 is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there will be no school.
