Writers, opera singers, fun runs and more out in Millsap

Mineral Wells Index

— While we have many events and happenings taking place right in our midst, Millsap people have recently been contacted by two celebrities who invite us to be a part of the latest happenings in their careers.  Author Joyce Bishop Morris, whose roots are in Millsap, wants everyone to know her latest book has been published.

Amazon now releases Mrs. Morris' books, and the latest one, "Jerzy Girl," became available in September. The "Annie" series were her first books, and out of this set "Sweet Annie" is one of the Top 100 Best Sellers in Southwestern History on Amazon.

The Annie character is of special interest to folks around here, because she is based upon the life of the author's grandmother who made her home in Millsap. Joyce has many fans from our area, and she always graciously let's everyone know what is happening with her writing. Right now, she has two more books in the works, and "Jerzy Girl" is steadily climbing the Amazon charts. May this kind lady have much more success as she continues to enrich lives through her books.

In other celebrity news, New York City opera professional Cole Grissom will be in concert at Bethesda Methodist Church, which is located just north of Garner on F.M 113. This event to which the public is invited will take place Sunday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. Cole is coming to the area and giving this special performance especially for family members who live around here.

Mr. Grissom is highly trained with a degree in his chosen field from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and a Masters Degree in Opera from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Those from his family who are looking forward to this event include Alleen Coalson Stringer and Jonnie and Wilmer Crumb, all of Mineral Wells, and Mac and Tommie Coalson of the Garner area. Cole is the grandson of the deceased Charles and Margie Coalson Grissom, who made their home in Weatherford.

His recital will consist of opera songs during the first part of the performance, followed by popular Broadway tunes.  This is an exciting and very special happening for our area, so plan on taking advantage of this free, once in a lifetime opportunity!

Downtown Millsap is really looking spruced up with the beauty of Charlie and Jan Felts Recognized Yard for the Month of September bursting in beautiful fall flowers. Adding to this, Joy's Hair Salon has some great decorations and lovely foliage in the yard.

A new addition to our city block is a very cute Smokey the Bear sign that carries the serious message of the level of fire danger for the day.  The sign is courtesy of Millsap VFD.

Come by and enjoy the beauty and all of the great things that Millsap offers.

Soda Springs Baptist Church hosted a wonderful Fifth Sunday gospel music evening, with one of the highlights being a performance by the Soda Crackers Band. Another standout performance was by an entirely rhythmic instruments group. There was great participation and enthusiasm, and this musical takes place every fifth Sunday at 6 p.m.  Everyone is welcome.

Those from the church family of Midpoint Chapel will be hosting a Fall Faith Festival for residents of Mineral Wells Nursing and Rehab in the afternoons of Oct. 9-11.  Residents will join in worship, singing hymns, and studying about faithful Bible servants. There will be crafts, games and great fellowship. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Midpoint folks to be at the center and share a very worthwhile time with the residents.

Those who live on and travel Fairview Road express their appreciation to the personnel of Precinct 3 for the upgrade to that area. The road is newly paved and striped.  Break away style mail box posts have been placed wherever possible making the delivery of mail easier on carriers. A great job which will help out many.

Last reminder that the 3rd Annual Ticket Lady Trot will take place Oct. 12 at Millsap High School. This 5K and 1M Fun Run benefits the Mary Aaron Memorial Scholarship Fund. The 1M Fun Run will start at 8:00 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m., with age categories from 19 and under to 70-plus.  Registration fee is $20 for the 1M and $25 for the 5K.  To register online go to GetMeRgistered.comTicketLadyTrot, or you can go by Millsap High School and pick up a form.  For more information call (940)393-6573.

The Millsap PTO sponsored Fall Festival will be Oct. 19, 6-9 p.m. There is a need for bags of candy and two liter drinks, so if you can provide please drop them off at the Elementary office anytime.
