Millsap’s Log Cabin Days Festival a hit

While we move into hot, summer like days and all that goes with them, it's fun to take a look back at the recent Millsap Log Cabin Days Festival. This was a wonderful two-day event held in the middle of our town at Heritage Park.

The first day of the festival was held on Friday, May 10, and was Education Day for fourth-graders of the Millsap and Garner Schools. To present history with a hands-on aspect, the students experienced many old-time learning opportunities. There were tours of the cabins and antique post office. The youngsters got to shell corn and cook cornbread. They made soap, candles, and butter. They also drew water from a cistern and washed clothes on a rub-board. Other highlights included making whirly bird toys out of string and buttons and corn husk people.  The kids also learned how to sew quilt squares.

Sons of Confederate Soldiers in full gear and their horses were on site, along with Millsap mountain man Steve Maddox who gave tomahawk demonstrations.

After participating in all of this the students and the many adult sponsors enjoyed a picnic lunch which was topped off with peach cobbler from Natty Flats Smokehouse. This was a very unique and valuable experience for the kids.

Next came the actual festival, on May 11, with a free breakfast of delicious campfire cooked food for the whole community. Area organizations and vendors covered the lots with all kinds of goods and free literature and samples. There were great exhibits which included antique cars, arrowheads and barbed wire. Live music was presented throughout the day with bluegrass, traditional country and pop all being performed.

A highlight of the day included the announcement by the Heritage Society that the rock which is the base for the memorial to deceased festival breakfast cooks and Heritage Society members weighed 44,370 pounds. Charlie Felts was the winner of the contest based upon guessing closest to the correct weight of this huge rock.
