Millsap Matters - March 2, 2014

— As we are enjoying glimpses of Spring, many of our youth are staying very busy with sports.  The Millsap Youth Association plays an important part in this aspect of area kids' lives.

The association recently held an Awards Ceremony at the Millsap Middle School to present basketball trophies to players who are in grades 1-6.  Everyone involved had a great season, and the local Girl Scout Troop was brought on board to offer out their boxes of cookies for sale at some of the games. The MYA is already busy with sign-ups and plans for the volleyball and baseball/softball seasons. This is a dedicated group of workers who do a lot to foster our children's growth in a number of ways.  Thanks, MYA!

Millsap ISD recently recognized the Fall Semester of Safe Employee Award Winners.  Chosen for their excellence in promoting a safe work environment were Leah Henderson, Chris Tinney, Donna Ford and Mark Greenway.  The program highlights workers who actively engage in safety and accident prevention on the job.  The district thanks these recipients for their hard work, dedication, and efforts to keep the work environment safe.  Congrats and much appreciation to this Super Safety Squad.

Beulah Baptist Church has a busy month ahead with a couple of great fellowships on the calendar.  At one event the folks will gather for a hotdog cookout and campfire sing along.  Later in the month they will have their Spring Fling which is a time of fun, games, and treats for the children.  Under the leadership of Pastor Tommy Pophin, who has recently been writing some inspiring articles for area papers, this church family is a blessing to many.  Have a great time at your March parties!

Here's a wonderful event to put on the calendar for Easter:  Holders Chapel invites everyone to join them for a Sunrise Service at 7 a.m. on April 20 (Easter morning).  The message will be brought by Pastor Steve Edge of Millsap First Baptist Church, with the congregation of Millsap First Baptist being special guests for the morning.  Following the service there will be a fellowship breakfast at 8 a.m., which will be prepared by the men of the church.  This is a great way to begin Easter Sunday.

Many people have been wondering how Raine Newby, the Millsap student who was critically burned over two years ago, is getting along.  The answer is he is doing well and getting better all the time.  He has had 22 surgeries so far with great progress being made.  This young man has not let the accident get in the way of participating in life.  He has been featured hunting deer on an episode of TNT Outdoor Explosion, attended World Burn Conferences in other states, and was elected president of his Sophomore Class.  He is riding horses and involved in giving back at Parkland Burn Center.  He is positive, amazing, and strives everyday to get better.  His family asks for continued prayer for Raine. What a miracle his journey has been and continues to be. Keep going, Raine.

Millsap Veterinary Clinic is the Gold Sponsor for 2nd Annual C.A.R.E. 5k/10k and 1 Mile Fun Run which will take place at Gordon ISD (112 Rusk Street, Gordon).  C.A.R.E. stands for Community Animal Rescue Effort and the organization encompasses Gordon, Lake Palo Pinto, Mingus, Thurber, and Strawn.  The group does multifaceted work for animals who need help.  All ages, plus furry family members, are welcome to the event which will take place  April 12 beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Besides the run there will be a quilt raffle, live music, and a farmers' market.  For info email mayfield90@yahoo.com.  Millsap Vet Clinic is to be applauded for their ongoing help to this

organization.  C.A.R.E. members say they could not continue the effort with them.  Well wishes on the fundraiser and thanks to C.A.R.E. for meeting a big need.
