Things around Millsap have been very busy recently, and two organizations had important meetings this past week. Millsap Masonic Lodge 1265 held their annual installation ceremony on July 16.
The special evening began with a wonderful meal of spaghetti and all of the trimmings in the lodge's patriotically decorated dining room. To celebrate the event a beautiful cake with the Masonic emblem was served. There were many visitors to the installation ceremony where the slate of newly elected officers included Russell Herrick as Worshipful Master. The ceremony was very impressive and we congratulate the new officers.
The Poe Prairie Cemetery Association held their annual meeting on the evening of July 20 with many in attendance. The business meeting included a decision to put a ceiling in the pavilion as a barrier against birds. In a very touching ceremony a new Veterans Memorial was unveiled. Seven veterans were in attendance for the unveiling.
Following the conclusion of business ice cream and treats were enjoyed. The evening included music, but wrapped up early due to the risk of bad weather.
Special thanks from the cemetery board go to the Malt Shop for the delicious ice cream and to musicians Roy Black and Eddie Weise.
In remembrance: Jacque Kirkland Cox, graduate of Millsap Class 1970, passed away in Decatur on July 17. Her service was held in Bowie at the First Free Will Baptist Church with husband, Larry Cox, officiating. Condolences to Mr. Cox, daughter Cheree Cox, brothers Johnny Kirkland of Weatherford and Mac Kirkland of Arkansas.
The community is saddened by the passing of Millsap Middle School student Austin Griffin. This young man passed away on July 18 and his service was at Soda Springs Baptist Church. Austin loved his pets and swimming. Sympathy to parents James and Sandra Griffin and other family members.
