‘Banner Day’ successes for Millsap community

Mineral Wells Index

— By Sharron Hudson | Special to the Index

Saturday, Aug. 10, was a banner day for two great events that took place in our downtown area.  The Second Annual Back to School Fair and the Housewarming for Triumph House were both big successes, even bringing Index reporter Clint Foster out to be on hand for these two top stories.

The Back to School Fair was held at City Hall and there were plenty of great supplies being handed out to all ages of students.  Volunteers were very organized and helpful, plus the local fire department was on hand playing a great supporting role.  Parker County law enforcement offered Ident-a-Kid, and Joy's Shear Creations Hair Salon presented many haircut vouchers.

There was a multitude of sponsors who made the fair possible, and the crew that put the event together was very pleased with the outcome. Thanks go out to everyone who contributed and helped, with special appreciation going to Joy of Shear Creations.  An awesome job in helping get the kids off to a strong start in school!

Over at the Community Center sponsors of the Triumph House housewarming did a great job of hosting this event to help furnish a safe house for trafficked girls who have been rescued.  To make the party light hearted the room was cheerfully decorated in pinks with many stuffed animals and flowers accenting the room.  On a serious note the speaker for the event was Parker County Volunteer Coordinator of Traffick 911, Mary Elliott.  She presented a very informative program, so the problem being addressed could be better understood.  Many useful gifts and generous money donations were brought in.  This event brought the safe house closer to being ready to take girls in.

Glad Millsap could be a part of this worthwhile cause.

Congratulations go the Mark and Stella Casey family on two joyous events.  Mark and Stella just celebrated their 29th Wedding Anniversary on August 4, and recently celebrated the birth of granddaughter Lynnon Parker.  This is their daughter Roxy's second daughter, with Lynnon's big sister being Brhylie.  The Caseys are a great family who are very community minded and we congratulate them on these two happy events in their lives.

The Recognized Millsap Yard for the month of August has been chosen.

Congratulations to Mark and Karen Barnes on receiving the award.  The whole property looks great, but what caught the committee's attention was all of the obvious care that goes into the yard work.  Karen puts her heart into this part of homemaking and the results are obvious.  Thanks Mark and Karen for making your home on Houston Street a point of beauty in Millsap.

The August meeting of the Millsap Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club was a very busy time.  The theme revolved around school days, and special speakers were Millsap ISD Superintendent Dr. David Belding and new Millsap Elementary Principal Cathy Bradshaw.  The women brought in new school supplies to be donated into the schools, and finalized plans for providing brunch on the three campuses for personnel as they return to work.

The meeting also encompassed the announcement of club officers for the 2013-14 year.  They are President Jo Ann Barnhart, Vice President Betty Jones, Secretary Ruth Barr, Treasurer Sandra Maddux, and Assistant Treasurer Juan Etta Gilbert.  Area ladies are always welcome to meetings, and the next one will be Wednesday, September 4, at the Millsap Community Center with the women beginning to gather around 10:30 a.m.

With fall coming people begin to look for new organizations to visit or join.  Here are some very worthwhile ones in Millsap, along with their dates, times, and locations.  Ladies Home and Garden Club-first Wednesday of the month, 10:30 a.m. at Millsap Community Center; Millsap VFD-first Tuesday of the month, 7:30 p.m. at Millsap Fire Station; Quilting Club-second and fourth Tuesday of the month, 9 a.m. at Millsap Methodist Church; Heritage Society-second Monday of the month, 7 p.m. at Heritage Park (log cabin grounds).

You are always welcome to these meeting and will find many great projects going on in all of them.
