Marjorie Lee Cowan, 86, a precious and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, went home to be with her Lord on Sept. 6, 2007, in Mineral Wells.
Service is 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at First Christian Church in Mineral Wells, with interment to follow at Woodland Park Cemetery. Rev. Danny Barfield officiating and the Pythian Sisters will provide a memorial ceremony. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are A. D. Garrett, Dickie Griffin, Tommy Wilson, Dennis Curtis, Jac Cowan and John Gordon. Honorary pallbearers are Walter Choate, Oscar Choate, Cecil Holifield, Bud Hutton, Mark Helm, George Fox, Bob Mehalic, Don Whisenhunt, Ed Talbot, Gene Talbot and Bob Mustarde.
Marjorie was born July 15, 1921, in Whitefish, Mont., to Alphonse Herbert and Jessie Diether Rosenwald. She married James E. Cowan, Dec. 31, 1942. He preceded her in death March 31, 1975. She married Roland Fiedler, Sept. 29, 1988, and he preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1992.
Marjorie moved to Mineral Wells in 1944 and worked for Alprodco as office manager from 1955-1976 when she resigned and went into the bookkeeping and tax service business for herself. She was very successful, but it was a lot of hard work. So when A.D. Garrett offered her a job at Garrett’s Jewelry she accepted. She was still keeping books for many of her clients, including A.D. Garrett and Carl Kessler until his death and her retirement this year.
She was a devoted member of Mineral Wells Temple No. 14 Pythian Sisters serving as Temple secretary for many years. She served as grand treasurer from 1971-76, when she became a past grand chief. She served as supreme representative in 1988. She was captain of the drill team for many years and she still marched on the team, going to Canada in 2006 at the Supreme Convention. She was honored by the Grand Temple of Texas as outstanding Pythian Sister in 1975, 1976, 1982, 1988, 1994 and 1996. She served six years on the Pythian Retirement Home Board in Greenville, Texas, and six years on the Board for the Texas Pythian Home for Children in Weatherford. Donations may be given in her memory to either of these worthy organizations. She was a driver for the American Cancer Society, taking people for radiation and chemotherapy. She also served as secretary for two years. She battled breast cancer herself in 1998 and beat it.
She was a charter member of the Mineral Wells Woman’s Club, serving as secretary for two years and conducting several audits for them. She was an active member of the Zonta Club, serving as reporter 1976-78, treasurer in 1979-80 and president in 1981-82. She was a member of the First Christian Church, serving as a diaconate for them in 2003.
She is survived by her children, Jim and wife Nelda Cowan of Cisco, Texas, Melanie Cowan Curtis of Mineral Wells and Jeff and wife, Connie, Cowan of Mineral Wells; grandchildren, Diane Marie Cowan, James Anthony (Jac) Cowan, Christi Lee Wilson and Meredith Frances Cowan; step-grandchildren, Ginet Gordon, Deann Gordon Spence and John Darrell Gordon; and great-grandchildren, Marlee Ann Wilson, James Austin Cowan and Kalaya Jaylynn Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1961; her mother in 1968; sisters, Grace Woodward in 1996 and Mary Lou Stuff in 1998; and brother, Jack Rosenwald in 2002.
She was deeply loved by everyone and will be greatly missed.
