Emma Wynell (Odom) Erwin

Mineral Wells Index

— Our loving mother, Emma Wynell Erwin, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, June 9, 2013. She was 81 years old.

Wynell was born Aug. 25, 1931, to J.L. and Cedric Odom at their farmhouse in the Live Oak Community of Palo Pinto County, Texas. In the summer of 1943 she was baptized into Christ at Lipan Church of Christ where they attended. She graduated from Santo High School in 1949 and quickly aspired to a professional career working as dental hygienist.

She shared a room with some of her high school friends at the Hexagon House apartments in Mineral Wells, and it was on one of their many outings that the young ladies attended a revival meeting at North Side Church of Christ.

At the revival that night, Wynell’s Aunt Orphie Odom introduced her to a handsome Army Air Force sergeant from Graford, Bob Erwin. Only a few months later, on March 31, 1950, Bob and Wynell were married in the same farmhouse where she was born.

They moved to Denton so that Wynell could attend Texas Women’s’ University and earn her education degree.

With her teaching certificate in hand, she moved her family back to the farmhouse in 1959 and began her career at Houston Elementary in the Mineral Wells Independent School District.

At the same time, Bob and Wynell began building their dream house in Weatherford. When completed in 1963, Wynell taught 4th grade at Travis Elementary in the WISD until her retirement.

In their customized RV, they went on extended camping trips from Alaska -to- Mexico, and later, they traveled the world together on cruise ships and tours. On their 50th wedding anniversary, in the year 2000, Bob and Wynell recited their vows in the same farmhouse where she was born and had originally made their vows in 1950.

She loved her families dearly, both her children and her extended Christian family where she was a member at South Main Church of Christ in Weatherford. And in return, she was loved by many who remembered her as their friend and school teacher.

Bob, her beloved husband of 63 years, passed away Aug. 28, 2012, and she’s survived by her brother, Eugene Odom, and his wife, Billie, of Santo; her sister, Carolyn McCarty, and her husband, Don, of Weatherford; and their four children: Bobby Louis Erwin and his wife, Jackie, of Arlington, Randall Scott Erwin and his wife, Carolyn, of Santo, Laurel Nell DeBord and her husband, Don, of Ft. Worth, and Nanette Leah Sullivan and her husband, Jon, of Ft. Worth. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren with two on the way, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 North Elm St, Weatherford, Texas.

Services will be conducted by Michael Lum, Thursday, June 13, 2013, 10 a.m. at South Main Church of Christ, 201 South Main St., Weatherford, followed by interment at Landreth Cemetery. Pallbearers are Tony Chandler, Chris Jones, Mark Erwin, Jack Smothers, Wesley Lynch, Phillip Shewmake, Jeff McCarty, Trey Sullivan, Brad McCarty, Don DeBord and Jon Sullivan.

The family wishes to thank Weatherford Arbor House for the loving care they provided for Wynell. Memorial gifts may be given to Wynell’s favorite charity, Christ’s Haven for Children, 4200 Keller Haslet Rd, Ft Worth, Texas.
