— POSSUM KINGDOM – Don Zahn, aka DZ and Papa Don, 78, died Monday afternoon, March 24, 2014, at his home at Possum Kingdom Lake, surrounded by his loving family.
Memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday, March 28, in the Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Chapel. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Lakeridge Chapel, in Lubbock. Graveside service is 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, at Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock.
Don was born Dec. 3, 1935, in Montague, to Pete and Mellie Zahn. They moved to Lubbock when he was 3. He served in the Army for two years. Don married Ruth in 1960 and they were married 53 years. Don was in the paving business for 50 years, most of those years in Lubbock, and eventually moved his business to Possum Kingdom Lake, where he retired in 2010.
Don served two years on the board of the Possum Kingdom Lake Chamber of Commerce. He spent many, many years of his life racing motorcycles and cars. Don and his family were members of The West Texas Boondockers motorcycle club for numerous years. He was a pilot for 40 years and had many different airplanes that he loved passionately. He also loved riding his Sea Doo around the lake and up the river, and always had to be out front of all his friends. He loved speed and loved anything fast.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, of Possum Kingdom Lake; son, Rick Zahn and wife, Debbie, of Possum Kingdom Lake; two daughters, Donna Beitel and husband, James, of Bridgeport, and JoJo McKee and husband, Mark, of Lubbock; a brother, Ronnie Zahn, of Lubbock; a sister, Shirley Myers, of Cotton Center, Texas; six grandchildren, Tasha Fontaine and husband, Cody, of Weatherford, Ryan Zahn and wife, Megan, of Mineral Wells, Beau Burgess, of Lubbock, Brooke Burgess, of Lubbock, Shelby Zahn, of Mineral Wells, and Ashley Hamilton and husband, David, of Perrin; three great-grandchildren, Maddie Fontaine, of Weatherford, Ryder Hamilton, of Perrin, and Ellie Zahn, of Mineral Wells; and three more great-grandchildren on the way this year.
