Mineral Wells Index

— Paula Jean Morgan, 85, of Midland, passed away on Sept. 28, 2013, at her home in Midland.

Born in Kingsmill, Texas, on April 19, 1928, Paula was reared one of two siblings in Pampa, Texas, and Independence, Kan. Graduating from Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., in 1951, she started a career as an educator in Conway Springs, Kan., followed by teaching stints in Idalou, Texas, and Wilson, Texas, prior to finishing her teaching career in Mineral Wells from 1967-1995.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Vernon Clifford, and her mother, Jessie Mae Smith Clifford, July 1, 1977, and Nov. 29, 1982, respectively.

She is survived by one sister, Joan Whitmire, of Tulsa, Okla.; three sons: Richard and his wife Lois from Watauga, Jerry and his wife Elizabeth from Keatchie, La., and Jon and his wife Kim from Midland; two grandchildren: Blake Morgan and his wife Victoria of Lakeway, Texas, and Emily Tompkins and her husband Michael of New Braunfels; and one great-grandchild, Blair Catherine Morgan, of Lakeway, Texas.

While in Wilson and Mineral Wells, she worked multiple jobs in addition to teaching to provide for her three boys which she was raising solo. They were her pride and joy and she would sacrifice anything for their well-being. She passed on an uncompromising work ethic to all three boys.

This dedication to hard work was also evidenced in her 40 plus years of teaching as she expected all her students to be overachievers regardless of their gifts. Having overcome dyslexia herself, she understood that all children were not gifted equally but all had the opportunity to excel given those gifts.

In later years her grandchildren, Blake and Emily, became the apple of her eye. Her steadfast encouragement and support will be greatly missed by all.

A special thank you to both Dr. Summer Merritt and Argelia Guerrero for their loving support and service over the last few years.  A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the Chapel in the Wallace Building at Manor Park Retirement Community in Midland.
