Jerry LeRoy O’Brien

Jerry LeRoy O’Brien, 77, of Springtown, died April 16, 2014, at home.

A memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport, officiated by Jimmy Williams.

Jerry was born July 14, 1936 in Lockport, Ill., to Hershel and Elsie Irene (Allee) O’Brien. He served his country in Korea and was with the U.S. Army from 1953-56. He married Frances Johana Kemper on Feb. 15, 1958, in Gainesville, and the couple moved to Wise County in 1972.

Jerry was a devout, loving husband and father to his family. Others will remember him for his strong, caring, one-of-a-kind personality; but most of all everyone will remember his sense of humor.

Jerry started working for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad as a railroad switchman in 1957 and retired in 1977. He was also a member of the UTU (United Transportation Union). His hobbies included farming, construction and mechanics – anything pertaining to his farm.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Frances; daughters, Sherrie Ramsey and husband, Robert, of Paradise, and Cheryll Allison and husband, Hank, of Mineral Wells; son, Richard O’Brien and wife, Carol, of Fort Worth; brother, Gerry O’Brien and wife, Carol, of Springtown; sister, Peggy Smith, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, David Ramsey, Shyla Moore, Micheal Allison, Kristina Mitchell, Anthony Liles, Amanda O’Brien, Timothy O’Brien, Michelle O’Brien and Katherine O’Brien; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kathleen South, of Palestine, Ill., and Betty Bowling, of Fort Worth; and brother, Larry O’Brien of Springtown.

  • Sunburn isn't the only sign of summer that can leave you itchy and blistered

You've got a rash. You quickly rule out the usual suspects: You haven't been gardening or hiking or even picnicking, so it's probably not a plant irritant such as poison ivy or wild parsnip; likewise, it's probably not chiggers or ticks carrying Lyme disease; and you haven't been swimming in a pond, which can harbor the parasite that causes swimmer's itch.
