Just one day remains for last-minute tax filers, though local and regional experts offer tips for those who have yet to send in their paperwork.

Lori Vick, senior tax preparer at H&R Block in Mineral Wells, said tax procrastinators often panic as the deadline approaches.

“When they call me, I tell them come down and give me a chance,” she said. “Typically we can get if finalized.”

An individual can almost always visit a tax preparer and submit the paperwork the same day, she said, noting there are options even for the rare cases in which same-day filing is not possible.

“If you’re missing something you can’t get by April 15th, we’ll file an extension for you,” she said, noting there is no extra charge for such services.

“A lot of them are scared,” she said. “A lot of times they get better news than they expect.”

Jackson Hewitt tax preparers released tips for the millions of taxpayers across the nation who still haven’t filed.

To prevent mistakes or oversights, individuals can access an online checklist of necessary tax documents at jacksonhewitt.com.

The company also suggests filing taxes electronically, which is faster and offers confirmation of receipt.

Additionally, those who are unable to file by the Monday deadline can request an extension to postpone a tax return for as much as six months.

An extension does not provide additional time to pay taxes owed, the release cautions, noting a professional tax preparer can assist in determining whether someone owes taxes and if an extension is warranted.
