LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: To the citizens of Mineral Wells

To the citizens of Mineral Wells

Dear Editor,

I want to take this opportunity to thank each of our citizens who voted in the recent 4B sales tax election to support the Baker Hotel.

Not only was the overall turnout one of the largest in many years, the overwhelming support for the proposition was nothing short of remarkable. What a great demonstration of our community support for renovating the Baker Hotel.

As many of you know, this whole process dates back to 2006 when then-Mayor Clarence Holliman, Richard Ball, of the Mineral Wells Industrial Foundation, and State Rep. Jim Keffer began the process of securing a developer who would someday renovate the Baker Hotel.

The Hunter Chase group appeared on the scene not long thereafter and have been working hard on this project since that time. Although the vote May 10 was a great beginning, there is still much work to do.

Nonetheless, I believe we have taken a great step forward in accomplishing this project and it is my firm belief that we will get this project done.

Again, thanks for your support and vision for the Baker Hotel and our community!

Mayor Mike Allen, Mineral Wells

Bringing back the Baker

Dear Editor,

I came to Mineral Wells, courtesy of the U.S. Army, in 1962 and over the years I have followed many plans to bring back the glory of this grand hotel. The latest plan seems to be more advanced than any I have seen.

While I think it would be wonderful if this could take place, I have doubts as to how practical the project would be. If completed it would require occupants. What does the area offer that would bring enough guests to make it self supporting?

The Chamber of Commerce will have its hands full attracting enough events to keep the doors open. The days of Crazy Water drawing people are over.

Benson Vann, Houston
