What is Paul Lawrence Dunbar Community Group Inc.?
We are a 501c3 organization classified by the Internal Revenue Code. We were determined to be a public charity under the code section (A). We are qualified to receive gifts under section 2055, 2106 or 2522 of the code. This determination letter was received by us on Jan. 26, 2012.
Who are we?
We are a group of teachers, students and parents who taught or attended Dunbar prior to integration. Our building is listed in the Texas Historical Record. Our group was deeded this property, with the goal of putting back into community service. Bylaws were drawn up by a group of lawyers and lawyers aides in Austin. These by laws proved to be unworkable for an organization of our size and purpose. Therefore, our board voted to have them revised. These revisions will be examined and voted upon at our next meeting.
Through managements skills acquired by me over the years, I saved our organization enough funds to implement a much needed after school program. We discussed several options. After much thought and prayer, we decided to implement a latch key program for kids. Therefore the program is for kids in grades one through six.
Our organization has no source of continuing income. We have no income that can fund programs at this time. We exist for the primary purpose of putting our facility back into community use and to preserve a small part of our heritage. We could have kept those funds for insurance and future renovations, however, we decided to make aware a service needed in our community. In the past we have had friends and public servants who have helped us with insurance cost.
As we implemented the after-school program, it was clearly stated that to continue this program, grant funds were a must. Everyone involved was told that a grant, with paid staff was a must. Those same criteria were applied to any summer program or program when the next school year began.
