Meet the Pirates Night set for Aug. 23

PERRIN – We got a little relief from this drought Monday with a quarter-inch of rain. It sure looked good coming down, although we did have a little excitement from it. There was a loud clap of thunder and, all of a sudden, I had three little dogs in my lap.

A few minutes later, I noticed a truck with flashing lights coming down the road that goes out to the pasture. Then two more trucks went by, so Fred went out to see what the problem was. Lightning had hit a brush pile that has been out in the pasture for several years when we had the fencerow cleaned and a new fence put in. It started the pile to burn and it spread out to the dry grass. About 2 acres burned before the rain put it out. The firefighters hosed down the brush pile and then came back a couple of times to check to see if it had gone out. Fred talked with the fire chief and he said they had two other calls from lightning strikes that afternoon. I guess you have to take the bad along with the good rain. Thanks to our volunteer firefighters for such prompt service.

We also got a brief shower on Wednesday, not much rain, but the temperature stayed down and any moisture we get is appreciated.

Meet the Pirates Night is Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. in the high school gym.
