The newspapers, including the Index, have been crammed with stories about people who are being cruel to animals. In my opinion, that is shameful.
In the Creation story in Genesis 1, it is says, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’”
It is my belief that God did not mean that because we had dominion over animals we should kill them all or mistreat them. In my opinion He meant we should take care of them, protect them from harm, master them so that they might survive and be strong – for their good as well as for ours. I don’t believe He would have had Noah take pairs of animals on the ark only to have us destroy them once the flood had passed!
It is for our good that we should raise the healthiest, fattest cattle, sheep, goats and so on for our food. It is for our good that we should have horses, donkeys and other beast of burden to help us with our chores and our entertainment. But we have a responsibility to treat all these creatures with kindness.
Only a very sick mind, in my opinion, would wound an animal just to wound it – to cut it, beat it or shoot it for pleasure. In fact, I believe it has been proved that people who do such things will, indeed, do the same to another human, given the opportunity.
Because of all the cruelty to animals there are agencies set up to help other animals find forever homes with people who will love them, take care of them, and make them a part of their lives.
