Although Tennessee Ernie Ford came from, well, Tennessee, I will always remember the stick where he said someone was “as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs.” That always reminds me of some of the sayings my mother and grannie used to use.
I guess my favorite of Mother’s was, “They are so poor they couldn’t buy a bed bug a night cap if cotton checks were a cent a bolt.” And she always said it real fast, so it was like, “mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy” from the novelty song Mairzy Doats written by Milton Drake in 1943. Oh, and Mother used to sing that song to me, too!
