Reflections on jinxes

By Sue Seibert | sue_seibert@att.net

“Jinx – you owe me a Coke!”

Have you ever said that or something similar when you have said something at the same time as someone else? That was what we kids in Stephenville used to say, and I remember both having to buy someone a soda and someone having to buy me a soda.

Raf tells me he doesn’t remember saying that in New Jersey, but the other day I was watching an episode of Castle, and both actors said something at the same time. One then said, “Jinx!” and then told the other he could not speak until she allowed him to or he would owe her a soda!

I had never heard the expression outside Stephenville, and especially on national television, so I was quite startled and decided to do some research.

Well, thankfully the plumber is here today (Monday) after a weekend without the back toilet, washing machine and shower. The plumber, Norman’s, would have come sooner, but we had too much to do to be here when he came, and we didn’t want to ask him on Sunday. That’s God’s day!

I have been a member of ancestry.com since its inception - even before, as I was one of the first to participate in rootsweb.com which was subsequently pirated by a few not-so-good people and turned into Ancestry. Ah, but that is another story.

Ok, ok, I know some of you fellows were rather amused by my column a while back - the one telling you not to read. Well, while this column is about women, I hope you will read it and be encouraged by it to assist in the preservation of one of the few grand old ladies left in our town.
