Reflections on local attractions we don’t know about

Mineral Wells Index

Last weekend, along with our friends, Jim and Louise, we went down to Coffee Creek RV Park to attend the “Sisters on the Fly” camp out, with their displays of various campers that were hand painted and decorated. If you’re interested in photos, go to my blog at http://siouxsue.blogspot.com.

Anyway, we had a great time, met some wonderful people, and we saw some amazing creativity, but we wouldn’t have known a thing about it were it not for our friend and nurse practitioner, Carla Hay-Perdue.

Why did we have to find out about the fun and festive event from a friend? Because, I suppose, we didn’t know where to look to actually find out what’s going on in our area.

We went from Coffee Creek on down to the Brazos River Catfish Cafe for a wonderful meal. I hope all of you know where that is! It’s south of Millsap, and you can find out about it, too, on my blog.

But, what else was going on in Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County this last weekend? I don’t know, but I’ll bet every one of you know about something the rest of us don’t. How did you hear? How can we spread the word?

I went to the Mineral Wells Chamber of Commerce page and with some searching I discovered the “Sisters on the Fly” camp out listed, but when I looked for other things I know are happening this spring, I couldn’t find them.

For instance, the Old Settlers Reunion in Palo Pinto is June 2. Did you know that? I had to go to the Palo Pinto County Historical Association page to find it. And they have a lot going on clear through the end of the year, but it’s only on their page.

For all of those who graduated from Mineral Wells High School at least 50 years ago, do you know when the 50-Year-Club meets each year? Their website hasn’t been updated since last year. I know it’s in June. I think it’s the second or third weekend, but I’m not sure which.

The Fossil Park site has not been updated either! How about the rodeo? Some may know which weekend in May, but I’ll bet newcomers don’t.

Or the Vietnam War Museum? They have a great calendar of events coming up, but it’s only on their website.

We have several museums in the county, but the lists of activities are either on their websites or they don’t have a website, so it’s all just word of mouth or up to us to search out.

And you can’t blame the Index or the Chamber, because they can’t announce stuff if they don’t know about it. And they have to have official notification! Right? Right.

I think it’s just too bad we don’t have a clearing house on one of the local websites that updates us on all the various activities offered to us and visitors to our area each week! We have such a great heritage and such wonderful activities, but no one will participate if they don’t know about it!

I am going to suggest one other thing. If you do send your news to the paper, be sure that its correct. I know of at least one club that meets weekly, but the Index has the wrong time and days. Why? Because no one has updated the Index!

Again, Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County are great places for entertainment and education, but we have to know the five answers to the questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. Let’s work on it!

Editor’s note: The Index welcomes information on non-profit events and monthly happenings and will run them in the At-A-Glance column, as space allows. Please email your event information to editor@mineralwellsindex.com.
