‘Come follow me!’

The Mineral Wells Wednesday Bible Study Club met for its regular meeting on Nov. 13 at the Black Horse Restaurant. Mrs. Betty Wells was the hostess for the meeting and Rev. Judy Gayler brought the lesson from the final chapter of the Book of John.

Rev. Gayler began the study by asking what we have learned from and about the book of John.   There is no birth story in this gospel; the book of John was written later than the other gospels.  John’s gospel was written to assure those waiting that Jesus will come again, and it reminds us today that Jesus will return.

This 21st chapter of John is an epilogue.  Throughout the chapter the emphasis is that Jesus will return. We learned that Jesus appeared first to Mary. This is very uplifting to women, particularly in a time when women had no standing.

The disciples are grieving. They retreated to a place that gave them comfort. Today, when we are anxious and afraid we can go to a place that is quiet and gives us comfort and Jesus will come to us.

Simon Peter announced he would go fishing at the Sea of Galilee. Fishing was what he knew best and the place where he found comfort. Several other disciples said they would go with him.

Just after daybreak Jesus appeared on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize him.  Jesus called to the disciples saying, “Children, you have no fish, have you?”

He told them to cast their net to the right side of the boat. They caught so many fish they couldn’t haul in the net.  Then John recognized the voice and said to Simon Peter, “It is the Lord!”

Again, Jesus offers a meal; he has prepared a fire on the shore and tells the disciples to bring fish from the boat to cook.  The disciples went fishing  – a familiar and comforting task for them – and Jesus found them.
