Worshipping in Palo Pinto County

Iglesia Templo Bautista

MINERAL WELLS — Editor’s note: The Mineral Wells Index is publishing a series of articles profiling churches throughout Palo Pinto County and their pastors:

Church name: Iglesia Templo Bautista

Address, phone number, e-mail: 501 S.W. 15th St., Mineral Wells, TX; (940) 325-1542; templobautistamw@hotmail.com.

Church affiliation or independent: Templo is a Baptist Bilingual Church, affiliated with P.P.B.A. and also with General Baptist Convention of Texas.

Pastor’s name and time at church: Freddy Trevino is the pastor and has been there nine months.

Pastor’s family (spouse, children, grandchildren): wife is Brenda Trevino; five children, Stephani and David Flehearty, Tracy Trevino, Amy Terrell, Chris and Sheena Terrell, Michael and Amanda Trevino; plus six grandchildren, Yari and Ivy, Brody, Marcus and Bethany, Journey.

Number of church members: 65 active members.

Educational background: As for education, nine years. I was ordained in 2004 at Indian Creek Baptist Church. In 1999 I received my Chaplaincy Certificate from Texas Baptist Chaplaincy and served as volunteer chaplain at Corrections Corporation of America in Mineral Wells in bilingual services for 13 years. I have also performed jail ministry for Palo Pinto County and have been involved with Addiction Recovery Ministries in Mineral Wells, to God be Glory!

When, where and how did you come to first accept Jesus Christ? Gave my life to Christ at age of 8 or 9, during Vacation Bible School, but didn’t follow-up until after 23 years of drug addiction and alcoholism, 10-year prison sentence, insanity and chaos! Finally, I surrendered my life to Christ on April 21, 1990, as I sensed God calling me and tugging at my heart, especially for those lost people still left in the insanity of this lost world, who are going through the same life as the one from which God miraculously rescued and delivered me.

What modern day authors, philosophers or theologians inspire you most? Why? Authors, philosophers and theologians that have greatly inspired me are Charles Stanley, T.D. Jakes, Joyce Meyer, have probably been my biggest mentors besides our local pastors Guy Withers, Kirk Horton, Ted Oliver, Noel Baker, Gerald Tomlin, Nathan Buchanan, David Phoenix; these are the ones who have journeyed with me to bring me to where God has placed me; to God Be the Glory.

How would you describe your approach as a pastor, church and religious leader? Accountability, humility and discipline from the very Shepherd himself, Jesus Christ, through His Word and God’s Holy Spirit, I believe are my approach as a pastor.

Why did you decide to follow a calling into ministry? The church that has called me is unique because it is a bilingual church and God allows me to reach both cultures and more. The most important truth I can share is that, “It is not about religion but it’s about a personal relationship with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

What is most important about selecting a church home? The approach of selecting a church is lots of prayer, being able to hear and sense the voice of God for guidance and direction because of the importance of having a loving, understanding and compassionate family. But most of all let the peace of God be your umpire.

Please provide a history of the church: Templo began as a mission church by First Baptist Church of Mineral Wells and became its own church on Jan. 30, 1983.

In the 40-day season of self-denial called Lent, some Christians give up daily comforts such as chocolate, soda or Facebook. Attorney Kent McKeever felt called to try something a little more uncomfortable.
